Oiu' Hundred Seconds To Health
THE CURE of cancer of the cervix, or opening of the uterus, is the gratifying result of j^ts early detection and immediate treatment. The Pap test, that rightfully honors its discoverer. Dr. Papanicolaou. is one of the most important reasons for the remark- _ ably high percentage of cures ‘ of cancers of the cervix. The test is a relatively sunp 1 e one. A smear taken directly from the cervix reveals Coleman with a high de gree of accuracy under the microscope the presence or absence of cancer
cells.
Unfortunately, the Pap test is so time-consuming that large segments of the population are still being deprived of the advantages of this important examination. New Technique Now a new and improved technique has been devised at the University of Wisconsin. It simplifies the method of testing so that the cancer story can be told within one hundred seconds. The new test depends for its accuracy on an electronic computer system which quickly analyzes the number and the character of the tissue cells smeared from the cervix of the womb. By this method, hundreds of smear examinations can now be performed in the tune that it formerly took for a single study. Additional Test The test will be used not as a total replacement for the Pap test, but as an additional one to make available diagnostic cervical smears for the mass population. The shining light of hope in overall cancer treatment is the successful cure of cancer of the cervix. The response to educational campaigns, and these newer techniques, have
paid happy dividends m the cures after the early detection of this hazard to the female population. • • • Q Is the teat for cancer of the cervix of the uterus a difficult or painful one?
