Same Facts About Sinusitis
Q: Does everybody have “sinus ?" A: Everybody has sinuses, but not everbody has sinusitis. "Itis" means inilammation or infection. Therefore "sinusitis” means inflammation or infection of one or more sinuses. Q: What are the sinuses? A: The nasal sinuses are hollow cavities in the front of the skull. Most people have four sets of sinuses: the frontal sinuses Just above the eyes: the Dr Coleman antral sinuses just below the eyes, in the cheeks: the ethmoid sinuses, between the bridge of the nose and the eyes; and the s-phenoid sinuses far back in the noee. AH healthy sinuses are lined with a thin mucous membrane. Q: What is the purpose of the sinuses? A: It is said that sinuses lighten the weight of man’s bead by providing these empty spaces It is also thought that they aid in the resonance of speech Qr What causes infection of the sinuses? A: Sinusitis can be caused by many varieties of bacteria. Sometimes these bacteria enter the sinuses when there is an infection in the nose A severe cold may produce a certain acute type of sinusitis. A be eases of the teeth may be responsible, too Sudden and sharp changes m temperature and humidity and nasal allergies predispose many people to sinus infections. Q*. What are the symptoms of sums infection? A: Stuffiness of the nose, thick QBsal discharge and headache
are predominant symptoms. Q: Is it true that once the sinuses are washed out by a doctor it is necessary to repeat this procedure indefinitely ? A: This notion is entirely false. It is necessary to irrigate (wash out) the sinuses only when they become filled or clogged with pus after an infection. This treatment can be painlessly performed with a local anesthetic. Q: What other treatments are there for sinusitis? A: Discriminately chosen antibiotics. limited quantities of nose drops, steam inhalation and application of heat to the face may all be beneficial and help in the cure. Q: When is surgery of the sinuses necessary? A: There are various reasons for surgery of the sinuses. Like surgery anywhere else in the body, it is a carefully chosen form of treatment. Q: What are polyps? Are they caused by sinusitis? A: Polyps are grape-like thickenings of the mucous membrane lining They may occur in the sinuses or in the nose as a result of long-standing infection or nasal allergy. Polyps can be painlessly removed to prevent further obstruction of the sinuses or the nasal passages, and to improve breathing. Q: Does one infection of the sinuses lead to chronic sinusitis? A: It does not. However, when sinus infections are neglected, they may very well lead to a chronic condition.
