Major League May Not Have 20 Game Winner
NEW YORK UPI — Could this be the first year in modern baseball history that the major leagues fail to produce a 20-game winner? With Sandy Koufax probably sidelined for the rest of the season, it is possible. Using last season as a criterion when 10 pitchers won 20 or more games, none of the pitchers in either league, excluding 19-game winner Koufax, are setting a pace currently which would lead to 20 victories. Entering the September stretch run in 1963. Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Whitey Ford of the New York Yankees already had reached the coveted mark. Four hurlcrs — Jim Bouton of the Yankees, Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants, Dick Ellsworth of the Chicago Cubs and Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds had 19 triumphs. The other four pitchers destined to reach 20 victories had 18 wins by Sept. 1. They were Steve Barber of the Baltimore Orioles, Camilo Pascual of the Minnesota Twins, Bill Monbouquette of the Boston Red Sox and Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves. The current records include: Ford 14-5, Bouton 15-11, Pascual 13-9, Barber 9-10, Monbouquette 9-11, Spahn 6-12, Marichal 15-6, Ellsworth 13-14. Maloney 11-9, and Koufax
19-5.
The AL did not have a 20game winner in 1955 and again in 1960. The only time the NL did not have a big winner was
1931.
Girl Standout Olympic Hope NEW YORK UPI — Nine more berths were filled on the U.S. Olympic swimming team Monday but one performer stood out above all others. She is Marilyn Ramenofsky of Phoenix, Ariz., who astounded spectators at the Astoria pool, where the Olympic swimming trials are being held, by slicing five seconds from the women’s 400 meter freestyle world record with a clocking of 4:39.5. Fred Schmidt of Chicago established an American mark in the men's 200 meter butterfly with a time of 2:08 and thereby secured his ticket to the Far East.
'Pte Fan Raps Sale Of Yankees CHICAGO UPI — An irate fan, writing to the owner of the Kansas City Athletics, foresees purchase of the New York Yankees by the Columbia Broadcasting System as the first step toward domination on major league baseball by corporate giants. A s owner Charles O. Finley said ihe letter from William T Hogan, Cincinnati. Ohio, was the “most amusing" of many he has received from fans who support Finley’s opposition to CBS ownership of the Yankees Hogan said corporate giants might be enticed into buying into the big leagues “in the interest of creating a nationwide public image or some other obscure reason.” Indians Blank Denver B°»rs INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The Indianapolis Indians blanked the Denver Bears 3-0 Monday as Carl Bouldin struck out 14 and Ken Berry powered his 19th home run of the year. Bouldin gave up three Denver hits and walked one. Tommie Aaron and Denver stalling pitcher Carl Greene were strike-out victims three times each. Berry’s home run led off the seventh and broke a scoreless
tie.
The last two Indian runs came on a single by Bob Catton. a double by Marv Staehle and a single by George Williams. Aussies Sweep Swedish Matches BAASTAD. Sweden UPI —A confident Australian Davis Cup team left for the United States today to challenge the Yanks for the coveted tennis trophy at Cleveland. Ohio. Sept. 25-27. The revitalized Aussies were confident of regaining the cup after completing a 5-0 sweep over Sweden Monday in the interzone finals. Wimbledon champion Roy Emerson beat Ulf Schmidt, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, and Fred Stolle wound up the series by stopping Jan Frik Lundquist, 5-7, 6-4, 6-0, 6-3.

Roach To Call Dallas Signals By United Press International National football league ;coaches are learning that the second most important man on the squad is the second string quarterback. The Dallas Cowboys, with signal caller Don Meredith out for an indefinite period with a bad knee, have lured former Green Bay and St. Louis veteran John Roach out of retirement and may keep the 31-year-old SMU grand on the roster all year. Coach Tom Landry would have been forced to go with untested second year man Sonny Gibbs and rookie Jack
Jacobs.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. UPI — The fans who last season saw the San Diego Chargers wallop the Boston Patriots 51-10 for the American Football League title were watching perhaps the most explosive team in the short history of the AFL. The long bomb to flanker Lance Alworth, the bewildering broken field running of halfback Paul Lowe, and the quick scoring bursts up the middle by fullback Keith Lincoln were the earmarks of this team. Sustained drives and ball-control football weren’t in the book. The Chargers look the same this year, which could mean a second straight league championship. Veteran quarterback Tobin Rote is back to call the plays, throw the passes and deliver the sleight-of-hand which gave Lincoln and Lowe that extra step they needed for their long bursts. The question is whether the 36-year-old Rote’s passing arm will hold up after discovery of calcium deposits on the elbow. Whether last year's marks can again be achieved is a good question, but even a strong semblance of last year’s performance may be enough. Lincoln finished fourth in league rushing, but averaged 6.5 yards a carry, best in the league. His 206 yards gained against the league's best defense, Boston, in the title game further established him as a major threat.
