NFO NEWS On the local livestock market scene the pressure of the NFO withholding action continues to make itself felt. Although prices are fully $1.00 higher, receipts continue to remain less than one-half the normal number according to NFO tallies. At 4:45 Friday afternoon approximately 700 had been bought at the local yards; of these, only about half were “local” hogs. Some were shipped in from other stock yards to meet shipping orders; all such animals are counted twice— that the original yard and again on the home front This practice tends to give a distorted view of the actual number sold across the country. However, there seems to be no immediate end to to the holding action as NFO members are tenaciously battling to force meat packers to meet their proposals.

THE LETTERS DPT represent one of our greatest accomplishments in the safeguarding of the health of our children. D (diptheria), P (pertussis, or whooping cough), and T (tetanus) are now preventable diseases because of safe and successful vaccines. There is still only one factor that allows - these diseases to take an unnecessary yearly toll in illness and even in Dr. Coleman death. That is the carelessness, neglect and apathy that counteract the remarkable victories against DPT by the failure to be immunized. Many Children Unprotected It is pathetic and deplorable that there are still today about 15,000,000 pre-school children who are incompletely, inadequately immunized, or are completely deprived of the available protective immunizations. Six out of every ten children under the age of five are being needlessly exposed to the dangers of disease by "putting off” vaccination. Added to these statistics is the inexcusable failure to protect against polio. Even the painful memories of young polio victims in wheel chairs or with legs in braces apparently do not sufficiently affect some people, who still continue to disregard the importance of using these successful vaccines. Thousands of children have not yet been given the advantage of this protection, one of medicine’s all-time great contributions to mankind. Educational Campaign Public health officials are desperately waging an all-out educational campaign, against the unconcerned indifference of parents and guardians who deny their children the advantage* of these precious health safeguards. Th* United States Communi-

cable Disease Center in Atlanta, Georgia, is directing its efforts toward the lower economic group. The rate of immunization among children in this group is about 50 per cent less than among more privileged children. But health should not be, must not be, and is not a special privilege. Protection against these dread diseases is available free of charge to every single person in America. Takes Few Minutes The only cost is a few minutes of time — hardly an unreasonable price to pay for the gift of health. Can you afford not to protect your child against these crippling and killing diseases? Where can one get free immunization ? Vaccination is available to everyone who seeks it. No one, regardless of financial status, need be deprived of these vaccinations. Physicians and hospital clinics, In cooperation with local and federal public health agencies. will arrange for free preventive innoculations. In most instances the only cost is a telephone call or letter. Flexible Schedule How soon after birth should infants be immunized? The schedule of vaccination is fairly flexible. In general, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus and polio innoculations may be started any time after the infant is about one and a half months old. Smallpox vaccination should be performed before the child is one year old. The timing of reinforcing, or "booster” shots and the initial innoculation depends on the judgment of your physician. These columns are designed to relieve your fears about health through a better understanding of your mtnd and body. AH the hopeful new advances in medicine reported here are known to doctors everywhere. Your individual medical problems should be handled by your oton doctor. He knows you best.
