LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Cement Dust — It is a problem. After reading the letter it is only natural I suppose for the people of the cement plant to feel as they do but out of respect for their fellow citizens, one would think they would feel differently. All Greencastle people. including the cement plant employees know the problem exists so why fight it? Let's face facts and reality and work together to eliminate this one problem among others that exists. Through togetherness and cooperation many things can be accomplished but through division and no regard for others there is no advancement. It's a sad affair that more hasn't been done about it in the past few years. It will take time and money no doubt but it is a consolation to know that it is being thought about.
After reading all the letters concerning the cement dust in this community I feel sure that people have greatly misunderstood the situation. I'm certain that the Lone Star plant is a great asset to this community and no one would want it moved. The employment, etc., should never enter the picture. The problem is the dust which falls from the stacks. Evidently the Lone Star was aware of this condition since they did install one filter. If one filter did not hamper the employment, why would the rest of them? According to government today, air pollution is a major problem throughout this great land of ours. Its a situation that should be of interest to every individual that lives here. I'm certain no one here wants to see the
plant removed. Just the dust filters or whatever it takes to curb the rain of dust most of the time. Sure, there are other problems facing our city such as the dump, stone quarry, stockyards, etc., which have been mentioned. These are all problems which face our city. The officials, I'm sure, are aware of these problems and are working toward correcting them. We must live with the times and as our city grows, more and more problems will arise. Therefore. I feel it the duty of all citizens to be alert and work together for the betterment of our community and its people by working to correct the problems as soon as possible. No community nor city can expect any advancement, without a change. It would be very foolish to believe that ! Greencastle would be advanced any in 50 years from now if we stayed just like we are today. People should think of correcting this dust problem as a step forward not as a step to eliminate anyone from employment, etc. It seems the initial point of the problem is the dust and not all the many other things which have been brought out in all the letters. I'm sure that the person who collected the dust did so for the betterment of ' the community in mind, and I respect their forwardness in this adventure. The editor has asked for the people to write their viewpoints on this situation, so as a citizen with no disrespect for the Lone Star or its employees I felt it my responsibility to write this letter.
