Scranton Will Host GOP Summit Session

Desegregation Suit Is Filed

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. UPI — The federal government sought massive restaurant desegregation in its first court action under the new civil rights law Wednesday and Negroes asked

for blanket school integration in the heart of Alabama. The public accommodations suit was filed by the Justice Department against 15 restaurants at Tuscaloosa and requested a preliminary injunction preventing the establishments from pursuing “the policy and practice . . of discriminating against Negroes.” Several defendants in the suit said they had not complied with the new law because of threats by whites. S. D. Davenport. executive vice president of the Tuscaloosa Chamber of

Commerce, said it was “common knowledge that the management of more than one place has been threatened for complying with the law.”

Johnson Meets School Officials WASHINGTON UPI —President Johnson meets with more than 200 local and county school officials today to discuss a wide range of problems, including the effects of the new

civil rights law. The 4:30 p.m. EDT session at the White House was intended as a give-and-take discussion of such matters as vocational education, school dropouts, work projects, the anti-poverty program, and implementing the new rights law. The conference was set up along the lines of meetings the President has held recently with business and labor groups. Earlier this week, Johnson met with a group of presidents of land grant colleges and universities on agricultural matters.

In a related development, the White House announced that Johnson had called & conference Aug. 13 of 80 state university presidents and other top educators for what was described as a "cross-fertilization of ideas” on how to approach state and regional problem!. Johnson called the August meeting "an intellectual convocation of the states.”
