Serve Oat Burgers Next Cookout
Juicy Oat Burgers, topped with cheese or onion, served on toasted bans with lettuce and relish make a filling entree for an outdoor supper. This recipe for Patio Oat Burgers has been developed for cooking on outdoor grills. There is just the right amount of liquid for moist burgers, but not too much to make handling difficult. The liquid smoke adds an interesting flavor but this is not essential. Thrifty homemakers know that rolled oats are an excellent meat extender, especially in hamburgers. Not only do rolled oats help to make the food budget go further but. at the same time, they improve the nutritive value by the addition of protein, important B vitamins, essential minerals, and food energy. Patio Oat Burgers 114 pounds ground beef 2 teaspoons salt 1 cup rolled oats, uncooked, 1 « teaspoon pepper quick or regular *4 teaspoon of liquid smoke, 1/2 cup chopped onion optional 1 egg s /3 cup milk or tomato juice Combine and mix ingredients. Shape into 8 patties, about 314 inches in diameter. Grill or broil to desired doneness over low glowing coals, turning once. Serve plain or on bun topped with vegetables, chili sauce, cheese, or sour cream, as desired. Yield: 8 patties.
Flaky, Tender... Napoleons
Are Apple-Lemon Filled
Take a can of creamy-smooth canned lemon pie filling and a package of refrigerated apple turnovers and what do you have? Why the most delicious, flakiest Napoleons you’ve ever tasted, pastries that even the Emperor's army would have voted worthy to march miles for. These Apple Lemon Napoleons puff as they bake to tender perfection. Their apple-lemon filling is a combination of the apples that come in a snip-and-squeeze packet in the turnover package and the tart-sweet lemon that spoons easily from a can of pie filling. This is the kind of Danish-like pastry that takes to brunch or dinner table with equal ease, a standout at any occasion. One look at the recipe will show you just how easy these are to create, and one taste of the finished product, fragrant and hot from the oven and garnished with a swirl of frosting, will prove to you just how tasty these Napoleons are. Apple Lemon Napoleon# 1 package refrigerated apple turnover pastries 1 can (2*4 cups) lemon pie filling Carefully separate dough into 8 squares. Cut each square in half to form rectangles. Place on cookie sheet. Bake at 400° for 6 to 8 minutes, until golden brown. Cool. Fold apple filling into lemon pie filling. Spoon over 8 of the rectangles. Top with remaining rectangles. Drizzle icing over desserts. Serves 8.
