Northern-sided and Southern-
happened July 30, 1864, naturally were diametrically opposed. Thomas Robson Hay presents facts dispassionately in Dictionary of American History: Maj. Gen. David Hunter, defeated by Maj. Gen. Jubal Early at Lynchburg and forced ■to retreat up the Shenandoah Valley, burned crops and homes of Virginians along the way. Barly dispatched two cavalry- brigades under Brig. Gen. John A. McCausland (a Virginian) to Chambersburg, Pa., in adjacent Vnton territory, to demand a reparation of 9100,000 in gold or $500,000 in greenbacks. H# was ordered to bum the town if the indemnity was not maita. “McCausland went as dbected. No ransom of the amount de-
manded could be paid. The town was burned,” Hay winds up. Mark M. Boatner Ill’s Army history has these annotations: McCausland, who surprised the town at 5:30 a. m. to present the demand, waited until 9 for compliance, then had the 3,000 inhabitants evacuated. Col. Wm. E. Peters, of the 21st Virginia Cavalry, refused to comply with the order to fire the buildings, and was placed under arrest. Other officers and men objected, but the rest applied the torches. Two-thirds of Chambersburg was reduced to ruins. —CLARK KINNAIRD fll Contemporary engraving of ruins at Chambersburg. [From Harper’s Weekly, New York, 1864.]
