Wednesday night in Terre Haute. Greencastle's Little League All-Stars ran into a young man with the very common name of Smith, but a very uncommonly fast fast ball. Jim Smith, Terre Haute Americans pitcher, fanned 16 of a possible eighteen batters in the six: inning contest. He allowed only! two Greencastle batters to even | hit the ball in fair territory and the first Greencastle hit j did not come until 2 men were, down in the last inning. While Smith was firing his blazing fast ball by our Little Leaguers, his teammates were busy collecting 11 hits and 13 runs off starter Rick Bundy and reliever Darryl Pierce, who replaced Bundy in the fourth and who was in turn replaced J by Stinnett in the fifth. The big innins for the Terre i Haute boys were the second. | when they collected five runs, and the fifth when they scored sLx. The local youngsters looked j quite nervous in the early inn- J ings. appearing to be bothered 1 by the large, strange crowd. ; Charlie Brann, who pinch hit i for Staley in the sixth with two outs, got Greencastle’s only! hit of the game to spoil Smith's, no-hitter. Dodgers Counting On Forester CHARLOTTE. N.C. UPI — It seems as far back as Mike Budd can remember he was always holding a baseball, wearing a uniform or lugging a bat. Today. Budd is a bright prospect in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system and the club’s front office has invested enough money in the former 22-yeac-old Wake Forest student to indicate it believes he can make the majors. Budd is now an outfielder for the Salisbury Dodgers of the Class A Western Carolinas League and after one month with the club he is convinced the wait was well worth it. “Pro ball is everything I dreamed it would be since I was a little boy dragging bats for my daddy’s semi-pro team in Siler City,” he said. “I’ve been nuts about the game about as long as I can remember.” he adds. “And I won't be content until I get to the big leagues. Salisbury is a nice place to be, but Til be a lot happier in Las Angeles.”
