Heat, Humidity Prevail In U. S. By United Press International Summer choked most of the nation in a blanket of heat and high humidity today. Scattered showers in Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia failed to slice into the temperature climb. A building was reported on the verge of collapse in Akron, Ohio, where workers searched for the bodies of three persons believed killed when a section of a city street caved after Tuesday’s torrential rainstorm. A bridge over the Ohio canal in the city’s downtown area collapsed at the height of the storm. Death Valley, Calif., topped the nation’s “heat list” Tuesday with a 116 degree mark. Close behind were Las Vegas, Nev., and Philip, S- D., at 108 degrees and Rapid City, S. D., and Phoenix, Ariz., at 104. Golf ball sized hail pelted the streets of Akron, Ohio, and the Ohio Canal spilled across its banks in some areas. Torren-

Quick Nectarine Chutney
1 tablespoon butter or 1 jar (2 oz.) sliced pimiento
margarine
Y2 teaspoon curry powder 1 cup finely diced celery J /2 cup finely chopped onion 1 i teaspoon salt * 2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 teaspoon lemon juict t'i teaspoon cayenne
2 cups diced fresh nectarines
Vi teaspoon each ground
cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg
and ginger
Melt butter in saucepan. Blend in curry powder; simmer 1 minute. Add celery, onion, salt, brown sugar, pimiento, lemon juice and cayenne. Simmer 3 minutes. Add nectarines and spices; cook 2 minutes longer. Let stand several hours or overnight. Serve with loin lamb chops or other meats. Makes V/t cups.
Fresh Bartletts In Classic Dessert
The French dessert classic. “Pears Helfene,” receives a few deft California touches when made with fresh Bartlett pears from the Golden State for “Minted Chocolate Pears.” The result: An elegant dessert yon can prepare ahead of time and assemble is moments just before serving. Fresh California Bartlett pears arrive in markets in mid-July and reach their seasonal peak in August and September. Minted Chocolate Pears 4 fresh California Bartlett % teaspoon mint extract pears % cup semi-sweet chocolate 1 cup water bits 14 cup sugar % cup light corn syrup % teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons butter Pare and core pears from blossom end, leaving on atem. Combine water and sugar in saucepan; heat to boiling and stir in Vi teaspoon vanilla and Vi teaspoon mint extract. Reduce heat, add pears and simmer until fork-tender, about 10 minutes. Transfer pears to shallow dish. Boil sugar mixture until thick; spoon over pears to glaze. Cool. Melt chocolate over hot water; stir in syrup, butter and remaining vanilla and mint extract. CooL Serve over pears in individual serving dishes. Makes 4 servings.
Lightning Kills Two Teenagers INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Two high school seniors were killed Tuesday by lightning while they were on a summer job at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway golf course in suburban Speedway. The victims, Jerome U. Albright of Marion County and James Patrick Cross, Indianapolis, both 17, took shelter in an outdoor toilet during a thunderstorm. Lightning hit the small wooden building, according to one official, as if it were a bomb. Albright, a senior at Decatur Central, and Cross, a senior at Indianapolis Cathedral, were
doing landscape work and were not missed until late Tuesday afternoon when they failed to check in their equipment. Daniel G. Agleich, deputy coroner, said the boys had been electrocuted. The lightning apparently struck a comer of the rest room. The golf course is next to and inside the famous Indianapolis 500-mile race track.
Cypriota have brought in about 500. Under cover of darkness Sunday night, Greek Cypriots landed what appeared to be heavy military equipment from three unidentfied ships at anchor off the port of LimassoL Thirty-six trucks carted the cartes and packing cases to an unknown destination inland.

Boy Drowns ANDERSON, UPI — Mike Hefner, 9, Anderson, drowned in a public swimming area in a gravel pit near here Tuesday.
Baby Electrocuted WARSAW, Ind. UPI — The funeral of Melisea Ann Dahlquist, 7 months, was held today. The baby was electrocuted in i her home Monday when she touched a floor lamp and an electrial wire leading to a thermostat.

A perfectly baked cheese cake is a special dessert. It’s cool and refreshing and suitable for many occasions, even for a birthday. It is especially nice when served as a late evening refreshment.
Lemon Cheese Cake
IV2 cups zwieback crumbs
(about 19 slices) 2 tablespoons sugar
Vi cup margarine, melted 1 pound cottage cheese
Vi cup corn starch 4 eggs, separated
Blend zwieback crumbs, 2 tablespoons sugar, and melted margarine until fine, even crumbs form. Press Vi of the mixture onto bottom and sides of lightly greased 9-inch spring form pan. Bake in 325 degrees F. (slow) oven 5 minutes. Cool. Press cottage cheese through coarse strainer twice. Add corn starch and beat with spoon until fluffy. Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry. Beat egg yolks slightly; add V2 cup sugar and beat until thick. Mix in lemon juice, rind, vanilla and salt. Fold in cheese mixture, then whipped cream. Fold remaining V£ cup sugar into beaten egg whites. Fold into cheese mixture gently but thoroughly. Pour into spring form pan. Sprinkle with remaining crumb mixture. Bake in 325 degrees F. (slow) oven 1 hour. Turn off oven; let cheese cake stay in oven until firm, about 45 minutes longer. Cool completely. Remove from pan. Chill in refrigerator until serving time. Makes 6 to 8 servings.
