WATERING YOUR LAWN

July ancntugust are months when it normally doesn’t rain-enough

to produce a lush green lawn.

Watering isn’t necessary for a healthy lawn bat it’s vital if yo* want to maintain an enviable plot of grass during hot spells.

The decision to water or not ** water depends on you. If you feel ! it’s important to preserve a green turf during these months, then water. But remember, the waterI ;ng habit can become expensive, I especially in areas where water | is scarc.e. And when done imoroperly, it often hurts a sturdy

j lawn.

j Too little watering causes a shallow root system and invites j :rabgrass. Too much watering < :nts off the oxygen supply to ! roots, causes shallow roots and ’ 'reates an ideal breeding ground

1 for diseases.

To water properly, soak the rround to a depth of at least 6 nches. Once a week is usually sufficient, but twice a week will ake care of the worst drought :onditions. To check the water >enetration, insert a table knife >r sharp instrument into the rround. See how far and how asily it goes down. Summer is also the time to :heck your lawn for that dark ?reen color it had early in the season. If the lawn lacks this •olor, then most likely it needs litrogen to bring back the green-

less.

Apply a slow-release nitrogen ‘ertilizer. This type of fertilizer s non-burning, releases the ni-

trogen at a steady rate, amd avoids a big surge of growth which sometimes invites disease

and insects.

If yon don’t mind a brown lawn during summer, don’t bother watering. Most well-established lawns in the northern part of the United States can survive the summer months without watering and will usually revive with

the first good rain.

Drugs Help Relieve Hay Fever IF IT ISN'T hay and doesn't I Antihistamine drugs ara ause fever, what is "hay often exceedingly efficacious in jver”? j many instances. Hay fever is a group of symp- (; ause Drowsiness

pollens are generally responsible for this distressing "n u isance illness.” Pollen ization from the birch, maple and oak trees are some Dr. Coleman of the springtime offenders. Goldenrod and pollens of the agvveed family cause the "August misery” in sensitive or al-

ergic patients.

kvoid Pollen Exposure When the exact offending >lant, tree, flower or weed is cnown, exposure to them must >e avoided if relief is to be ch-

ained.

Unfortunately, this is not always possible. People cannot jlan their holidays around the ‘estimated time of arrival'’ of :he August pollen season. Many, but not all, of the ihemical secrets of the cause md control of allergy are known. The elusive ones are oeing actively sought. Until they are discovered, the uncomfortable hay fever victim lias a few choices for finding temporary relief. Method For Relief One method — probably the least effective—is to desensitize the patient during the actual pollen season. A better method is the preseasonal desensitization of the patient about six weeks prior to the expected onset of symptoms. This affords relief in about 75 per cent of patients. A third method is the perennial, year-round building up of a type of “immunity” to the offending substance.

It must be emphasized and remembered that some antihistamine (anti-allergy) pills often produce the unwanted side effect of drowsiness. Automobile drivers especially must be warned that the reflexes are not as fast with th« sleepy side effects of these drugs. The particular choice of treatment, the advantage of skin-testing, the use of cortisone and other drugs must be left to the discretion of the physician who knows your singular problem best. * * * Is the "one-shot.” treatment for hay fever and allergies definitely successful? The one injection anti-al-lergy technique is being used enthusiastically by reliable investigators in many parts of the country. Some doctors are more enthusiastic about it than others. Testing Takes Time It always takes a few years for the over-enthusiastic and the under-enthusiastic to balance out the advantages of & new method of treatment. There is sufficient reason to believe that the one-shot method may, before long, solve many of the resistant problems of allergy. Is hay fever catching? It definitely is not. Hay fever victims can, however, transmit the bacteria that normally lie in their noses, through violent bouts of sneezing. Don’t block that sneeze — just cover your

nose.

These columns are designed to relieve your fears about health through a bitter under* standing of your mind and body. All the hopeful neie advances in medicine reported here are known to doctors everywhere. Your individual medical prob» lems should be handled by your own doctor. He knows you best.
