with one trump more than declarer, so that East gets the setting trick with a low trump. East could not defeat the contract by leading a low spade at the second trick. West would take the ace and return a spade, whereupon declarer would ruff East's king. The-, dummy’s queen of spades would be good, so that East would be unable to make South ruff a second time. diamonds, and declarer plays low from dummy. East wins with the king of diamonds and is then at the crossroads. If East makes a normal goodmannered return, South makes the contract. For example, if East returns a diamond, dummy wins and leads trumps until East takes the ace. South gets the lead with the queen of diamonds to draw the rest of the trumps, and then declarer easily takes ten tricks. East should see how desperate the situation is by looking at the dummy. Clearly, the clubs are solid. The opening lead indicates that the defenders have only one trump trick. The hand can be defeated only if West ha: the ace of spades. One hope is to take two spade tricks immediately; another hope is to make declarer ruff enough spades to lose control of the trumps. RIGHT CARD It is not enough for East to return a spade; he must also return the right card in the spade suit. That is, East must lead the king of spades. This is desperate, to be sure, but quite safe if West has the ace of spades. When the king of spades wins the trick. East continues with a lo\ spade. South must ruff, and is thus reduced to four trumps When East gets in with the ace of trumps he leads another spade, and South is forced to ruff again. This leaves East
