On hearing in 1876 that the Emperor Meiji was to visit northern Japan, Ing assembled 10 of his brighter students at To-O-Gijuku for a royal cram session. Shortly thereafter, the school’s delegation appeared before the Emperor. It gave a demonstration of its English learning, including the rendition of an English hymn in Japanese. The music and Ing's work so impressed the Emperor, Bascom relates, that the Emperor greeted Ing personally. The students and their American teacher received about $3 and an English dictionary for their perform-

After three years of discouragement in central China and but four baptized Christians, Ing has wife now seriously ill, and their young son. John. Jr., | sailed for America. Fate, however, intervened. Either because of Mrs. Ing’s 1 continued poor health or because of the difficulty of booking passage. Bascom is uncertain. the Ings debarked in Yokohama about mid-1874. While staying with Methodist missionaries there, a young Japanese teacher came searching for a foreign educator who j would come to his feudal lord's school in northern Japan to teach the future lords something of the new Western learning that was just becoming popular | in Japan. Ing accepted. After three weeks he and his family arrived at To-O-Gijuku. a school of 300400 students. He taught English studies at the school and held worship in his own home. It decided to join itself with the worldwide Methodist Church of which Ing was a represen-

AIR FORCE PLANES COLLIDE IN AIR—These spectacular photos were made seconds after two big U. S. Air Force planes with 24 men aboard collided in the air and plunged into the Atlantic two miles off Hamilton, Bermuda. The camera crew that got the photos was filming a para-medica team jumping into the ocean in a practice astronaut recovery. Seven men were rescued.

CREAMY KRAUT ROUND DOGS (Makes 6 servings) % cup (small can) undiluted 1 tablespoon chopped chives evaporated milk 2 cups sauerkraut, drained 4 teaspoons all-purpose flour 6 irankfurters % teaspoon salt 6 hamburger buns, split and % teaspoon pepper toasted Combine evaporated milk, flour, salt and pepper; blend. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. Stir in chives and kraut; mix well. Heat to serving temperature, stirring frequently. Cut 10 deep slits across each frankfurter without cutting ail the way through. Cook in boiling salted water 10 minutes. Drain. Arrange kraut mixture and frankfurters on bun bottoms. Top with bun tops.
