Supreme Court In Tax Ruling INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The Indiana Supreme Court issued an important state tax policy decision yesterday in connection with facilities operated by charitable institutions which may put the skids on efforts of local communities to deny property
tax exemptions for such institutions. The ruling in an Indianapolis case held that a charitable ori ganization does not have to pay | taxes on restaurant facilities serving the public, if the profit is used for charitable purposes. It affected only the specific case involving a Moose lodge in the capital city. However, persons familiar with the background on the case indicated the
ruling was broad enough to perhaps cover situations in Johnson and Boone Counties where two church homes and a retired teachers’ center face loss of exemptions on grounds their residents are not charity cases. The high court ruling overruled a policy of the State Tax Board which permitted taxing a portion of the property owned by charitable organizations if that property produced profit

COMPANY FOR WMSER? here’s how to do it
right!
Expecting your husband’s boss for dinner? Next door neighbors ? Old friends ? Here’s how to set your table properly for casual—but tasteful—company entertaining. According to John Gilkes, nationally-famous dinnerware designer for the Taylor, Smith & Taylor Co., East Liverpool, Ohio, select dinnerware that fits your home and your way ©f life. “Real oven-to-table dinnerware, such as TS&Ts Colorcraft.” he explains, “has been epeciall/ designed for the modern hostess, who not only has to cook the meal but serve it as welL Oven-proof serving pieces let her take food right from the oven to the table, piping hot aad without embarrassing delays.”
Once you’ve selected your dinnerware, silver and glassware, Gilkes says, just follow these simple rules to make sure your table is set correctly. 1. Choose a cloth large enough to overhang the table by about 14". 2. Mark each place with a dinnerpiate. Make sure plate pattern is right side up and that plates are set about 24” apart, center to center. 3. Arrange silver in the order each piece will be used, starting from the outside and working in toward the plate. Knives and spoons belong on the right, with the cutting edge of the knife facing the plate. Forks should be placed on the left. 4. Lay folded napkin on each dinnerpiate, unless appetizer is
served. In this case, appetizer goes on plate and napkin should be placed left of the forks. 5. Place water goblet above the dinaer knife. Wine glass, if needed, belongs right and a little below the water glass. 6. Place bread and butter plate, with spreader on it, above the forks. Salad plate belongs left of forks and napkin. Coffee cups are not placed on the table until coffee is served. Time was when the success of a dinner was measured by its pretentiousness. “Not anymore!” says Gilkes. “It doesn’t really matter,” he explains, “if you serve crown roast of beef or roast beef hash, as long as they’re well prepared and attractively served. As long as you—as hostess—enjoy yourself, so, too, will your guests.”

from public use of facilities. Although restaurant or food facilities for the public were not involved in a Johnson County Board of Tax Review decision Monday which denied exemp- ] tion to the Indiana Retired Teachers Center at Greenwood and drastically reduced the tax exemption of the Indiana Methodist Home at Franklin, there was speculation that the same | principle could be applied to 1 lodging at these places. The ruling may result in a revision i of policy which exempts chari- 1 table institutions which do not j make a profit on their opera- j tions, or which invest all profits I in charitable causes. In Boone County, a similar j board plans to discuss the tax! exemption status of the Indiana i Baptist Home at Zionsville on ! grounds it is no longer a “100 | per cent charity” institution.
behavior. A financial report on file with the Indiana secretary of state showed today that the institute received $170,638 during the fiscal year ending June 30. Of this, only $6,658 was from book
royalties. The bulk was in federal grants. The institute was founded in the late 1940s by ur. Alfred C. Kinsey, an I-U zoology professor who wrote two best-sellers
bearing the titles “Sex Behavior in the Human Male” and “Sex Behavior in th n Human Female.” The books were published in the early 1950s and in 1955 netted $309,079 in royal-
ties. Kinsey died in 1956 and Drs. Paul Gebhard and Wendell Pomeroy, his associates in the institute, continued the research work.
