It's a question of etiquette or rhetoric. I’m not sure which. What should you say when an opponent makes a horrible mistake that gives you an undeserved contract?"

“The opening lead was the five of spades." my correspondent continues, ‘ and I carefully played the eight from dummy. East agonized over his play, and I gave him my best bored look. "Finally East played the ten of spades. All I said was: •What took you so long?’ And I showed my hand and claimed the first ten tricks. "My opponents had a brief squabble over losing the five spade tricks they could have taken, but then they both turned on me. I didn't have to be so sarcastic, they said. "Naturally, I offered them my own handkerchief to dry their tears. You have no idea what a kind soul I am. But they said they had a headache and went home. And then my wife gave me a lecture on politeness. "So tell me, Professor, what is the right thing to say?" DOING FINE Don't ask me what to say; you’re doing fine. When you run out of friends, you can always move to another city and atari on a fresh batch. Incidentally, East's problem looks more difficult than it really is. It'a true that the ten of spades would be the correct play If South had the ace of spades instead of the jack, but East should know that South does not hold the ace. It's easy if you put yourself in South's place with A-x or A-x-x of spades and Q-x in dummy. You'd play dummy’s queen, of course. If you don't play dummy's queen, you cannot have the ace. If you're wondering what to say in such situations, it's always safe to say nothing at all. It's not your problem; let the opponents solve it by themselves. But if you’d like to smooth things over, remark casually "The last time I made that mistake my partner was a perfect gentleman and never said a word. DAILY QUESTION | Partner opens with one spade, and the next player passes. ! You hold: S A 9 7 5 3 H 10- | 6 4 3 D 10 2 C 7 5. What I do you bid ? Answer: Bid two spades. Dei spite the magnificent trump ! support, your hand is woefully weak. You cannot afford to ] four spades.

Ike Must Submit Himself Soon By United Pren International It is about time for General Ike to come out of the sand trap and submit himself to a press conference for the purpose of illuminating some shadowy corners of Republican party policy such as on civil rights. Perhaps the General would state frankly what he thinks of the civil rights bill just enacted. It Is reasonable fce that he thinks some of it is wrong. It also is reasonable to believe that on the question of civil rights as legislated by Congress this year. General Ike stands somewhere between Sen. Barry Goldwater and New York’s Sen. Jacob K. Javits. It is reasonable to believe this because as president in 1960 he firmly opposed writing into the Republican presidential platform a provision for a Fair Employment practices Commission EEPC.
