Sheinwold ! On Bridge Don’t Rely On Goldfish To Play Hand Properly By ALFRED SHE IN WOLD Long and patient observation has taught me that there is a difference between goldfish and bridge players. (Not all bridge players, just some of them.) In the interest of science. I offer my evidence — in the form of a bridge hand. To most Americans South Africa’s policy of almost complete separation of the differing national groups seems very strange, especially in our age of civil rights demonstrations and legislation. “But,” explains Badenhorst,"you must try to understand that each of our four main national groups have a different cultural heritage and i a different level of development. We try to approach the business of living in harmony with
' each other with that in mind. I need arises. ^ o ! am not trying to sell our way of

In short, all continuations lead to one poor goldfish floating on the top of the water. A bridge doesn't gobble up that queen of spades at the second trick. He sees that he must surely lose one trump trick no matter how the trumps are divided. He is safe if he loses that trick immediately. Now it is West who cannot find happiness. If West leads another trump. South can drawtrumps and run the diamonds safely. If West, instead, leads hearts, dummy can ruff the third heart. Nixon Has New Role SAN FRANCISCO UPI — Former Vice President Richard M. Nixon has agreed to a Republican convention role that appears to eliminate him as a possible kingmaker in favor of a new role as GOP peacemaker. This was the net result of a decision to have Nixon, the party’s 1960 nominee, appear Thursday, near the end of the convention, to introduce the Republican presidential nominee and make an appeal for party unity in November. Nixon previously had been scheduled to address the delegates on Tuesday — the day before the nominating speeches and balloting. But Republican National Chairman William E. Miller announced Monday that Nixon would go before the convention two days later — after the fight for the nomination has been decided. “It is expected,” Miller said, “that the former vice president will at this time take advantage of the opportunity to make a plea for party unity.”
Shafto Has Big Problems SAN FRANCISCO — If you think everything is smooth and cozy in the Goldwater camp, consider the problems of Donald Shafto, generalissimo of the forces that will swarm into the aisles for a demonstration immediately after the Arizona senator is placed in nomination. Here it is C-Day minus six and Shafto is wrestling with the problem of whether to cover a baby elephant with gold paint and have in lead the Goldwater demonstrators up and down the aisles. The idea inflames his imagination, especially the thought of having a pretty girl
as a mahout.
But every time he gets ready to order up the elephant and the gold paint his thoughts turn to the membership of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Here is a sizable bloc of votes for the November election and it is an iron rule of politics that an,
Favor Generalized Civil Rights Plank SAN FRANCISCO UPI — A Survey of Republican platform drafters today disclosed a heavy preference for a generalized plank on civil rights — and a tough one on Viet Nam. About one-third of the GOP Platform Committee’s 100 members responded to a United Press International questionnaire on their attitude toward these and other issues expected to figure in the November presidential election. Of the 34 who replied, 18 said they would vote for the nomination of Sen. Barry Goldwater. The others ranged from uncommitted to supporters of Gov. William W. Scranton or backers of favorite son candidates. All but a few of those polled rejected the idea that Goldwater’s probable nomination would make it more difficult to write a platform calculated to win northern and eastern votes.

Kennedys Going To New York WASHINGTON UPI — Mrs. John F. Kennedy and her two children are giving up their home in Washington and moving to New York City in early fall. Mrs. Kennedy’s press secretary, said the former First Lady and her children, Caroline, 6. and John Jr., 3, would establish temporary residence in the Caryle Hotel in New York until they move into a permanent apartment.
Not Bothering Front Runner SAN FRANCISCO UPI —Republican foes of Sen. Barry Goldwater wheeled to attack from another position today in their almost hopeless battle to dislodge him from command of next week’s GOP National Convention. Led by Gov. William W. Scranton. Goldwater’s only major rival for the presidential nomination, the anti-Goldwater Republicans were pressing for a party platform which they knew would be repugnant to the Arizona senator.

''Every Penney" WASHINGTON UPI — Sen. Clifford P.
