Like Father, Like Son MIAMI UPI — Charles A. Lindbergh made history by flying 3,610 miles across the Atlantic in 1927 in 34 hours. His son, Jon, just set a record by staying 425 feet beneath the Atlantic for 48 hours. The 32-year-old Lindbergh and co-diver Robert Stenuit, 30, were placed in a decompression chamber aboard the research ship Sea Diver and were reported “resting comfortably” today while the vessel steamed for Miami. Mrs. Edwin A. Link, W'hose inventor husband designed much of the diving equipment, reported Friday the pair had “no difficulties of any kind” during the 48 hours they stayed at the bottom of the 425-foot deep northwest province channel in the Bahamas. Authorities said this was the longest dive at the depth ever recorded. The divers spent most of their underwater time in a specially designed inflatable rubber balloon-like chamber that is equipped with bunks, communications equipment, food and oxygen. The bottom side of the chamber is open to permit the divers to leave the “base station” and sw’im around the ocean floor with the aid of aqua lungs. The experiment was carried out in association with the National Geographic Society. The beauty of Link’s diving balloon — called “The Squid”— is that it allows divers to swim around at great depths, then return to the chamber to replenish their oxygen tanks and rest without having to go through the time consuming process of returning to the surface. It would be of great value in conducting long searches for sunken submarines at depths which may be reached by divers.
