He said that in determining ; wealth of the applicant, a car he owns would be valued at the actual market value, and that value would be combined with that of other real and personal property which may not amount to more than 52.000 for a married couple or $1,500 for a sin-

clubs.
The trouble with going after the diamonds hammer and tongs is that South canrot be sure of getting to dummy after knocking out the ace of diamonds. For example, South might lead the jack of diamonds and then another diamond in the hope that an opponent would be obliged to win the first or second diamond. Actually, East would refuse both tricks, and the diamonds would
not come in.
It would then be too late to go after the clubs. Declarer would be able to lead clubs from dummy only once.

Steers Rules On Aged Medic Aid INDIANAPOLIS UPI — If you wear a *10.000 diamond ring you can still qualify for medical assistance under the Kerr-Mills Act, but if you have a *1.500 antique chair in your parlor it may be that you cannot qualify. Indiana Atty. Gen. Edwin K. Steers said today. Steers gave this interpretation in a long opinion in which he answered questions from State Welfare Director Albert Kelly concerning differences between 1 medical aid for persons over 65 under current welfare laws and that available when the KerrMills Act is implemented next year. Jewelry and heirlooms “which are carried on or about the person would be exempt as personal effects’* from property value provisions figuring in determination of whether an applicant is eligible for aid, Steers said. “If a heirloom . . .is a large piece of personal property not carried on the person, it may not be so classified,” Steers said, adding that “whether an heirloom is to be classified as a personal effect must be determined from the facts in each

be enough to bring in four club tricks even though the
finesse succeeds.
ENTRIES TO DUMMY The correct play is to lead the jack of diamonds to dummy's king at the second trick. East holds up and you can return a club from dummy to win a finesse with the queen. Now lead the nine of diamonds to dummy’s queen. If an opponent has to win the trick you can get your diamond tricks and two clubs. Since East holds up his ace of diamonds again, you are once more in dummy to take another finesse. The jack of clubs wins, and you can continue with the ace of clubs
and a low club.
Now you make four club tricks and two diamonds,
enough for game.
DAILY QUESTION Partner bids one spade, and the next player passes. You hold: SJ98 HJ82 DKJ 10 76 C 6 3. What do
you say?
Answer: Bid two spades or slightly preferable, since you have a worthless doubleton. You cannot afford to show the diamonds since the hand as a whole is not strong enough for a response at the level of two. (Copyright 1964, General Features Corp.).
