F. Kennedy. The commission, headed by Chief JusUce Earl Warrea, completed its list of scheduled witnesses Thursday when Secret Service Chief James J, Rowley was questioned about measures taken to protect the President and how the system might be improved. Sources said other witnesses would be called only if further questions arose during the review of the recommended report the staff is preparing for the commission. Much of the report already has been written. While the commission was taking testimony from more than 200 witnesses. the staff of about a dozen attorneys was busy writing portions of the report. Bobby Kennedy Offered To Serve WASHINGTON UPI — Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy offered recently to serve “in any capacity” in South Viet Nam — presumably including ambassador, it was learned. President Johnson thanked him but declined to take him up on the offer. Kennedy offered his services to Johnson in a letter apparently prompted by the possibility that Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge might resign to become involved in the Republican presidential race. It was learned that Johnson

telephoned Kennedy as soon as he received the attorney general’s letter and expressed his deep gratitude for the offer. But he told Kennedy that he was not prepared to accept the offer. The President did not spell out reasons for rejecting Kennedy's offer during the telephone conversation. However, it was learned that one of Johnson’s reasons was that he wanted Kennedy to remain as attorney general during the continuing difficult period of conflict over racial matters. Kennedy’s offer to serve in Viet Nam was seen as an indication of his desire to continue to serve the administration. Kennedy has been withholding a decision on his political future pending a determination of what role Johnson might have for him after the election.

Rusk was the first witness as the Senate committee began the main part of its hearings today on the S3.5 billion House-passed authorization bill.

"Rock Bottom" WASHINGTON UPI —Secretary of State Dean Rusk said President Johnson’s S3.5 billion foreign aid request is a “rock bottom figure.” Rusk told newsmen after a two-hour closed door session with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that “the President feels this figure is justified” and that a cut by Congress of the $500 million proportions sought by House aid cutting demon Rep. Nothing wearies my thinking apparatus more than the decision making involved in buying a new sport shirt or a tie. For this reason I prefer that this choice be made by others. When a member of the family selects my attire, I have a perfect defense against such remarks as: “It doesn’t match anything you now have. Most men aren’t wearing that pattern this year. If you plan to wear that wild color combination, don’t expect me to go out with you.” Another decision that sometimes floors the head of the house may occur early in the morning when a fellow hasn’t been up long enough to build up his resistance. As he begins his daily dash to work, he will be stopped in his tracks by a request for a ten or a twenty to put food on the table or shoes on the feet. If this happens just after payday, the request may be honor-

ed without incident. If the need arises just before payday, the Old Man may have to decide whether to leave the whole wallet or whether to negotiate and hope that there’s enough left

for lunch money.

Down at tne central National Bank, the management has worked out a solution to this problem. It is called a joint checking account. What it amounts to is a system where maybe only one puts in but two can take out. This may appear contrary to arithmetic but it works for hundreds of Central

families.

This joint account provides instant money on a Mr. and Mrs. basis. And while either husband or wife may sign the checks, it is strongly recommended that the couple use the same check book. By doing this it is much easier to keep an accurate record of withdrawals and deposits on the check stubs. (Copyright David Barr 1964)
