24 Known Dead In Jap Quake NIIGATA. Japan UPI —Japanese and American airplanes parachuted emergency supplies into this port city today to fight fire, pestilence and hunger caused by Japan’s deadliest earthquake since 1923. The Japanese national police said 24 persons were known to have been killed. Ten others could not be accounted for and 282 were injured. The temblor struck early Tuesday afternoon. laying

(waste to a wide area along the western coast of Honshu but taking its heaviest toll of life and property in this city—the center of the Japanese oil refining industry. Fires in petroleum tanks in the port area raged uncontrolled today. Firemen battled the flames with chemical foam airdropped from U.S. Air Force ■ planes. Other American planes from Tachiwaka Air Base near Tokyo dropped food, water and medical supplies. The Japanese used American-made planes and helicopters on a series of mercy flights.
