Hell Ship Is Cursed By Fire HONOLULU UPI — The hell ship Pomona, its skipper hacked to death with an ax barely a month ago, doddered back to port today with its innards scorched by a fire that sent most of its crew adrift in

lifeboats.

All but three crewmen spent five hours on lifeboats or airI dropped rafts after flames engulfed the terror-haunted ship’s engine room Wednesday. The three who stayed aboard managed to control the blaze and reported later the danger was past and all hai "is were accounted for. A tu b took the crippled ship in tow. At least one of the lifeboats swamped immediately when put to sea by the abandoning crewmen. A coast guard plane dropped them a raft. The Brazilian-owned freighter, a World War II vintage Liberty Ship, sailed from here Tuesday night with a Chinese crew flown from Hong Kong to replace the multi-national crew which quit after the vessel’s skipper was slain with an ax and they lived in terror of his uncaught killer.

Admits Fatal Beating Of Girl KOKOMO UPI — Authorities said today a male babysitter has admitted the fatal beating of a 5-year-old girl because she was crying “and got on my nerves.” Police said James E. Fletcher, 24, an odd-jobs handyman, has been charged with manslaughter in the 3eath of Cheryl Lynn Johnson a week ago. The child’s father, Jesse Johnson, 67, was released from custody. Johnson was charged previously with manslaughter. He admitted paddling the child, police said, but he denied harming her.

Man Is Killed By Police Car By United Preis International A man was killed by a police car in downtown Indianapolis today, raising Indiana’s 1964 traffic fatality toll to 492 compared with 491 a year ago. Patrolman Thomas Robbins, driver of the car, said Abraham K. : rsh, 65, Indianapolis, walked in front of the vehicle. The poli -eman had just left roll call and was enroute to his district for duty. Kirsh suffered a skull fracture and a broken right hip and died in General Hospital 90 minutes later. A witness said Kirsh walked against a traffic light.
