Sheinwold On Bridge Spectacular Hand Amuses Collegians By ALFRED SHE1MVOLD My friends Bill Root and Larry Rosier, who make up the hands for the annual Intercollegiate Championships are aware that all work and no play makes bridge a dull game. They usually manage to slip a spectacular hand into the tournament to give the college men and women a taste of high life. South dealer Neither side vulnerable NORTH 4 AK54 V None O AKQ4 4 AK862 WEST EAST 4196 4 Q 107 3 2 S? None V 965432 0 1109863 0 5 4 QUO* * 9 SOUTH 4 8 AK Q J 1087 O 72 4 743 Sooth West North Kart 4 Pass 5 Pass 7 All Pass Opening lead — 01
Goodness only knows how you'd bid a hand like this in actual play. South opens with four hearts. North should certainly move If North jumps to six, South should surely go on to seven on the theory i that North cannot tell how ( solid the hearts are. The bidding shown is sug- | gested by Messrs. Root and Ros- ; ler, who must be getting conj servative. Even an Ivy Leaguer should jump to six hearts with the North hand.
However, the triefe is to make the grand slam, hot just bid it. I’ll start you off: dummy wins the first trick with the queen of diamonds. Isn’t that a big help? TEST TRUMPS Your first ambition is to reach in your hand and draw trumps before anything bad can happen. You cash dummfy’s low spade as the safest way to reach your hand. Then you lead the ace of trumps, and West’s discard tells you the bad news. Time for smelling salts. Don’t give up. East has tlje makings of a trump trick, but you can finesse through the nine of trumps even though you cannot lead a trump from dummy. Lead a club to dummy’s king on the theory that a first club is safer than a second diamond. Cash the kind of spades and discard a diamond. Now it is safe to lead the ace of diamonds from dummy. If East ruffs, you over-ruff and can draw trumps and take the rest. If East discards, you throw a club and lead the king of diamonds. Once more East must discard, and so do you. This leaves you ir dummy, with nothing but trumps in your hand. Any lead from dummy will give you a trump finesse and your grand slam. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with four hearts, and the next player passes. You hold: S Q 10 7 3 2 H 9 6 5 4 3 2 D5 C9. What do you say Answer: Bid sLx hearts, especially if not vulnerable. Partner is defenseless, and so are you. The opponents have a sure
small slam, possibly a grand slam. Your best chance is to get doubled at six hearts and lose less than the value of a slam.
