Radium Found /n Mobile Dump MOBILE Ala. UPI — Hospital authorities continued their efforts today to discover how two small vials of radium found their way to the city dump. Authorities said no one was apparently exposed to possible radiation from the radioactive material A hospital spokesman at Mobile General said the vials, about the size of matchsticks,

were noted missing Tuesday. A quick search led to the city garbarge dump where they were found.

Mystery Clouds Deaths Of Couple LOS ANGELES UPI — Mystery today surrounded the death of an Altadena, Calif., chemist whose wife, a doctor, was found drowned in the family bathtub, just one day previously. The deaths of Dr. Marion W.

Riggs, 46, and his wife, Dr. Marilyn L. Rigg, 38, orphaned their children, John 7, Richard, 9, James, 11, and Leslie, 10. Mrs. Riggs, crippled by polio since 1957, was found dead in the bathtub Monday morning by her husband. Several hours later his car struck a stopped school bus in nearby La Crescenta.

U. S. Takes Steps To Avert War NICOSIA, Cyprus UPI —The United States moved urgently

today to avert the possibility of war oetween Greece and Turkey over Cyprus. President Johnson ordered Undersecretary of State George W. Ball to cancel plans to return to Washington from Geneva tonight and to go instead to Athens and then Ankara. The action came as the United Nations reported the eruption of heavy new fighting between feuding Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the Kyrenia Mountains.

Why are food and water forbidden before an operation? This strict order by the physician is of great importance to the surgeon and to the anesthesiologist. An "empty stomach" makes the anesthesia even safer and prevents the possibility of food entering the

lung passages. When emergencies occur and surgery is imperative even if the patient has just eaten, there are now many safety devices that are scrupulously devoted to this

particular surgical problem.

Climatic Adjustment Why is it often so difficult to adjust to new climates during a short visit! Changes in altitude, humidity and barometric pressure definitely affect the normal functions of the body. The heart, the lungs and the blood circulation must undergo a period of adjustment to unusually high altitudes. Overexertion in a new climate should be avoided for a short period of time to allow the body to "acclimate” itself and stabilize its functions. * * * Ordinary Cold? Are antibiotics necessary for ordinary simple colds! The diagnosis of an "ordinary, simple cold" and the treatment of it depend entirely on the judgment of the physician. Too many people neglect a •evere infection under the

misguided belief that it is "onlj a cold.” On the other hand many will panic at the firs! sniffle and unwisely begin taking self-prescribed doses of antibiotics left over in the medicine cabinet from past infections. The decision of whether o» not to use an antibiotic car only be safely and accurately made by a doctor, who bases his conclusions on experl knowledge, judgment and past experience. * • • Not Always A Sign Is blood in the stool of an aduU always a sign of cancer! Emphatically tio. The most frequent cause of fresh, red blood in the stool is hemorrhoids (piles). A tiny crack or fissure around the rectum may break a small blood vessel, when straining is excessive during a bowel movement. Although most blood in the stool is not serious, it is imperative that the cause of all bleeding be determined immediately. « • • Reflex Mechanism Should sneezes be suppressed! No. Sneezing is nature’s reflex mechanism for ridding the nose of an irritating or offending substance. The nose should be covered, of course, to avoid spreading germs. Never squeeze the nostrils during a sneeze, for this may injure the ear drum.
