Vote Is Close In California SAN FRANCISCO UPI — Sen. Barry Goldwater and Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller ran neck-an-neck in the California GOP presidential primary count early today. Goldwater had claimed victory on the basis of network computer calculations but Rockefeller refused to concede. After trailing for hours once the polls closed Tuesday in this most crucial of 1964 proaiden-
tial primaries, Rockefeller pulled even before midnight and then inched ahead. Goldwater still could look like a winner, however, because the vote count lagged far behind in heavily populated Southern California areas where he was strongest. The prize for which the conservative Goldwater and the more liberal Rockefeller fought was a bloc of 86 GOP National Convention votes. The race was influenced by other factors than their conflicting political philosophies. Whatever the final outcome, neither candidate could claim a resounding mandate from the Republicans of California. Goldwater had concentrated his campaign in Southern California, particularly in Los Angeles County, which contains 40 per cent of the Republican vote in the state. The returns indicated that his strategy had paid off. When about half of the Los Angeles County vote had been counted, he had ouilt up a lead of 70,000 votes in that county alone. Rockefeller ran ahead in
northern California. Complete returns from San Francisco County showed him with a lead of almost 2 to 1 over Goldwater, and he also led in the populous suburban counties around San Francisco. In the three largest farm counties in the San Joaquin Valley, Rockefeller led in two and Goldwater in the other. While the Republicans were engaged in their party-splitting row, California Democrats had some primary contests, too.

LITTERERS NEW YORK (UPI) —Everybody is a potential litterbug. Litter is just as likely to be flung from a chauffeur-driven Cadillac as from a rattletrap jalopy. These conclusions come from a psychological “depth study” of the litter problem that finds "contrary to prevalent belief, no social, economic or ethnic group in America has a monoply on littering. The litterer is the average citizen.” A summary report prepared by the Institute for Motivational Research, Inc., says “the creation of litter by individuals is a thoughtless or careless rather than a malicious act or one arising from any psychological malfunctioning of the litterer.”
LBJ Discusses U. S. Strength NEW LONDON, Conn. UPI — President Johnson said today the United States is stronger than the combined might of all the nations in the history of the world. He said this improves prospects for peace. In a speech prepared for delivery before the Coast Guard Academy commencement here, Johnson predicted that American strength would continue to grow more rapidly than the might of all other nations. He said United States' superiority extended over the ability to deter atomic destruction, the ability to fight less than all out war, strength in the struggle against subversion, development of new weapons for deterrance and defense, and the ability of the American fighting man. “Those who would answer every problem with nuclear weapons display not bravery but bravado, not wisdom but a wanton disregard for the survival of the world and the future of the race,” Johnson said. Thjs country’s military might allows it to take more tangible steps toward peace than at any time since the cold war began, Johnson said. “And we will welcome any other proposal by any nation which promises realistic progress toward peace,” he said. “It requires patience and understanding to continue the search for peace while out adversaries so beset us. But this is what we must do. It is what, God willing, I intend to do.”

DAIRY CASTLE CELEBRATES IT'S 1 ST ANNIVERSARY Believing the city of Greencastle and surrounding communities would support another Soft-Serv Dairy Products Store, in April of 1963 we bought land and constructed our “Dairy Castle” Store opei^ng on May 30th of 1963. An anlysis of national sales trends by B. F. Goodrich showed the 14-inch and 15-inch sizes together accounted for nearly nine out of ten of the replacement tires sold. The most popular size was the 7.50-14, which accounted for about one out of every four tires sold.
