LOYALTY DENVER (UPII—When seventh grade teacher Mrs. Ruth Jeffs was forced to take down political signs from her classroom, her students — who had made the signs in preparation for a mock political convention — rallied behind her. 1
They forgot their partisan views and joined together in support of Mrs. Jeffs. Up came new posters at Merrill Junior High School — “Unfair to Mrs. Jeffs” and “Aren’t We Suppose to Think ” Commented Mrs. Jeffs: “I don’t think I’ve ever been so popular with the students.”

Alfalfa Must Be Top-Dressed Alfalfa stands must be topdressed annually with a high potassium fertilizer to replace the potassium removed in the forate and thus insure continued high yields. Potassium removal high. One ton of alfalfa will remove 37 pounds of potassium (45 pounds potash-K20). This is equal to the potassium in 75 pounds of 0-0-60 (Muriate of Potash). Thus, a 5-ton crop of alfalfa removes 7 times more potassium than the grain alone of a 100bushel corn crop. Grasses Rob Potassium. These potassium removal figures are even higher w?hen alfalfa is grown in association with ; grasses. In addition, grass root i systems are much stronger competitors for available soil potassium than alfalfa. Bromegrass, orchardgrass and timothy roots actually rob potassium from alfalfa roots. This is often the reason for loss of alfalfa stand rather than winter-ill-ing, insects or disease. Phosphorus needed too. The phosporus requirement for grasses and legumes is only Vi that of potassium. Maintenance for a medium soil test level requires 60 pounds of phosphorus (expressed a s P205) for a 5-ton hay yield. Don’t overlook lime. A 5-ton crop of alfalfa removes 14 times more calcium than a 100 bushel corn crop. The optimum pH for alfalfa production is between 6.5 and 7.0. Watch for Boron Needs. Boron deficiency or “yellow top” occurs on alfalfa on some sandy soils in northern Indiana and on many soils of southern In- j diana, particularly during dry weather. Symptoms are yellow j ing of the tops and stunted growth which usually appear on the second and third cuttings. Fertilizer Recommendations. Soil tests should be used to determine lime, and fertilizer needs. Without a soil test, an annual topdressing with 400 pounds 0-10-30 (or similar analysis) is recommended after the first cutting. In areas where boron is deficient, topdress with 20 to 30 pounds of borax per acre or apply fertilizer such as 0-10-30B.

AFLUENT GRANNY NEW YORK (UPI)—Grandma gets the biggest rush in the baby departments—as the only member of the family able to afford all the fashionable merchandise for the infant set. Now that baby must have a crib for indoors, a crib for outdoors, a crib for the car and a diversified wardrobe for all occasions, only a fairy godmother could foot the bill, the Cleaniness Bureau reports. Shastri Likely Nehru Successor NEW DELHI UPI — Lai Bahadur Shastri, a champion of compromise, was virtually certain today of succeeding the late Jawaharlal Nehru as India’s leader in time of trial. The former selection of a new prime minister will take place Tuesday in a vote by the 537 parlimentary deputies of the ruling Congress party. Party leaders decided Sunday to recommend Shastri. A potential party squabble w r as averted when the other leading candidate, Maroji Desai, announced he was stepping aside, thus clearing the w'ay for the soft-spoken, scholarly Shasthi, who is barely fivefeet tall. “I will abide by any decision tendered by the Congress president in respect of who will be the leader of the Congress party in parliment,” Desai said after a three-hour meeting of the party’s working committee. Desai’s statement referred to the avowed preference of Kumaraswami Kamraj, Congress party president, for Shastri’s
