Big George Bayer Leads Golf Pack

INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The way he is tearing Speedway's acres apart, big George Bayer may finally win himself a golf tourney. The beefy Bayer led a field of 104 including 10 amateurs, into the third round of the $70,000 Festival Open today with a nine-under-par 133 on rounds of 66 and 67. That gave him a two-shot lead starting the day but close on his heels were at least a dozen other strong contenders for the $12,000 first place money on golfs gold dust trail. Tied at 135 were Australia's Kel Nagle, Dean Refram, Bob Rosburg and George Archer, the first day leader who slipped from a red hot 64 to a secondround 71, even par.

Gary Tracksters Win City Title GARY, Ind. UPI — Gary Roosevelt, which won the Indiana high school track championship last Saturday has added its 20th city meet title to its laurels for the year. The Panthers made it six in a row Thursday night in chilly wind which kept down times in most events but did not prevent the athletes from setting two meet records. Tolleston’s Eli Myers set a meet mark of 23 feet 10 inches in the broad jump in the last performance in the event this season in the state. And Roosevelt's half-mile relay team won in 1:28.5, a tenth of a second slower than the all-time Indiana record set earlier this year by Tolleston. Roosevelt finished with 91 points to 63 for runner-up Tolleston. Froebel was third with 40, followed by Emerson 18, Mann 14, Wallace 5, Edison 4, and Wirt 4.

Fords Will Be Drivers' Targets INDIANAPOLIS, UPI — Every racing bug will have a rooting interest Saturday in the annual 500-mile auto race, with the most varied types of equipment in history to offer something this year for every fan. Races within the race will match more rear engine cars than ever against the almost standard roadsters, and there will be^three types of engines, the Offenhauser, pacemaker at the Speedway for more than 20 years. Fords and three supercharged Novis. The Fords, how r ever, will be targets for both rear engine machines as well as the roadsters. Seven rear engine cars, including all three in the front row, boast Ford engines.

The declaration resulted in the sending of the guardsmen and state police to Hillsdale and it also caused the halting of production at Essex, the disarming of plant guards and the end of picketing.
