Sheinwold On Bridge Beware The Over-Ruff Even In Moderation By Alfred Sheinwold Most so-called liberals say there’s nothing wrong with an occasional over-ruff, especially after sundown. The trouble is that one over-ruff leads to another, and this can threaten the safety of the home.

South played the seven of hearts, naturally enough, and West saw that his partner wanted him to ruff When West obediently ruffed with four of spades. South forgot his childhood training. He leaned over the table and overruffed with dummy’s ten of spades. Since this was a family game. North was declarer’s wife. And if you think the over-ruff didn’t threaten the safety of the home, you don’t know the lady. LOSES CONTRACT The over-ruff cost South his contract. No matter how South played the trumps East was sure to get a trump trick. I sometimes get letters on this sort of play. If South leads the jack of spades from dummy, East covers with the king. South can take the ace and queen, but then East wins a trick with the nine.) Since South also had to lose a diamond trick, he was down one. (Yes, dear reader. South could have saved himself by executing a squeeze play on West. But a player who over-ruffs at the wrong time surely can't be expected to know about squeez-

es.) The contract (and a happy home) is saved if declarer refuses to over-ruff at the third trick. Instead, he discards a diamond from dummy. Now he can pick up the trumps without loss and will still have a trump left in dummy to ruff out his

COLEMAN, M.D. Nose Bleeds Easily Controlled THE GENTLE art of nose I Of course, severe nasal bleedpicking, in children as well as i ing can sometimes occur in asadults, is often surreptitious and ! sociation with general diseases, can even be performed with But this is one of the least fre-

relative dignity and social grace by the use of a handkerchief to conceal the indelicate operation. BUT when the result is a gush of blood, many people react to this sight with terror and anxiety. When this happens, you usually find as many suggestions for “in stant control” as there are Dr. Coleman friends in the room. These "cures” range from placing a copper penny under the lip to a bunch of cold keys at the nape of the neck. Simple Procedure There is a practical and simple procedure for stopping the average nose bleed. Pack the nostril firmly with a goodsized piece of dry absorbent cotton. After the cotton has been inserted, press the nostrils together for five to ten minutes. This will almost always stop a simple nose bleed. Most nose bleeds result from a break in one of the many small blood vessels that lie on the surface of the nasal septum (the wall of cartilage which divides one side of the nose from the other). Another Cause Crusts that sometimes develop in the nose, especially in children, often become hard and dry. Picking these crusts off the wall of the nasal septum may cause nose bleeds. Keeping the inside of the nostrils lubricated with a light ail or vaseline helps prevent the formation of crusts and softens crusts which have already formed. A vaporizer, too. diminishes dryness of the nose by increasing a room’s humidity.

Use thick, dry suds to clean mattresses. Beat a handful of detergent with water to form a meringue-like froth. Apply with a sponge and set an electric fan to speed drying.

Remove rust from leaky faucets with vinegar.

Keep meat from sticking to barbecue bars by rubbing the grill with suet or salad oil.

Egg yolks will separate from the whites more quickly if. eggs are removed from refrigerator about 45 minutes before using.

IT WONT TAKE ANY WOODEN NICKELS—Edward Adam, president of the First National Bank of Monroe. Wis., tries unsuccessfully to put one of his newly-issued wooden nickels into a parking meter. The bank started issuing wooden nickels as legal tender because of a shortage of regular coins. He said his bank may go to other wooden coins for pennies, dimes and quarters.

quent causes. It is highly unfair to one’s emotions to consider that nose bleeds always mean serious trouble. Repeated episodes of epistaxis (nose bleeds) deserve specialized study to discover the underlying cause. Emergency Measures When a nose bleed occurs, the following simple emergency measures will usually help to control the bleeding: 1) Pack the nose, as previously described. Press the nostrils together. Keep the cotton in for at least an hour. Nature’s protective blood clot may be dislocated if the cotton is removed too quickly. 2) If the bleeding persists and your own physician is not available, doctors in the emergency room of any hospital are equipped to offer medical assistance. Painless Performance 3) Cauterization of the broken vessel with silver nitrate or electric sparking is painless and easily performed when necessary. 4) Determine the basic cause of the nose bleed. In all likelihood. it will prove to be of minor importance. Even a small amount of bleeding can be disturbing and terrorizing to the patient and to onlookers. It should be encouraging to know that most nose bleeds are of simple origin and easily controlled. These columns are elesigned to relieve your fears about health through a better understanding of your mind and body. All the hopeful new advances in medicine reported here are known to doctors everywhere. Your individual medical problems should be handled by your own doctor. He knows you best.
