Cuban Exiles 1

Hopes Are High MIAMI UPI —Cuban exiles • marked their nation's 62nd independence day with high hopes today that refugee leader Manuel Ray has outfoxed Fidel Castro’s military forces and re-

turned to the island.

Although the 39-year-old Ray had to run a gamut of what may be the biggest muster of Castro's Soviet-controlled and equipped troops since the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, refugees “felt sure he has made it.” Clandestine anti-Castro radio broadcasts which apparently j came from outside Cuba filled I the airwaves during the night. They did not identify them- ■ selves with Ray or any group. Urging Cubans youths to re- j volt, they claimed exile “com- i batants” are on Cuban soil 1 and asserted the island’s “mountains are full of free men ready

to fight."

Add Cheer to Concrete with Color ^

Would you like a brick red patio, a dark russet driveway or a cheerful blue walkway around your swimming pool? It’s possible with a concrete and masonry stain to be found at your local paint store.

Concrete is rugged and serviceable, but it is hardly a decorator’s dream material unless you happen to like one

color—gray.

lining these color stains, called Rez Color-Tones, you

can dress up your concrete areas in colors ranging from flamingo to chartreuse to beige, thus putting a splash of color in areas which usually get little attention beyond an occasional

hosing down.

These color stains, which are the same type used to finish wood floors and furniture, are long-lasting because they penetrate below the surface of the concrete. They may be scrubbed or hosed and are less likely to be affected by scuffing and outdoor exposure than surface coatings. The stains will not chip, peel, flake or lift. If you plan to stain new concrete, be sure it’s completely “cured.” If you want to perk up an old area, you’ll need to clean it thoroughly before applying the stain. Most grease spots, wax and slightly soiled surfaces can be cleaned with mineral spirits, turpentine and/or a strong detergent. If the area is very dirty, such as a garage floor, you’ll have to “etch” it clean with a mild acid solution so that the stain can penetrate the surface. To apply color stains, you can use a roller, a large paint brush, a push broom, or an old

mop. After the first coat has been applied, it will take about six hours before the stain dries completely into its true color. If you want a more intense color, apply a second coat. Some suggestions. To make sure you’ve matched the basic color you had in mind, it’s a good idea to test the stain on an out of the way or inconspicuous spot. Don’t expect to get a single color hue over the entire area. Because the texture and absorption of concrete or, masonry varies quite a bit, the finished result will be pleasing variations of the original color. Where can you use concrete stains? On patios, driveways, steps, breezeways, garage floors, walkways, basement walls and floors, concrete block walls, foundations, areas around swimming pools, play-

courts, you name it.

The “earth” shades, such as beige, clay, brown or green, are particularly compatible with porous stone, including flagstone and sandstone. You can use these colors to blend yard walkways or garden stepping stones into their surround-

ings.

Wherever used, color stains offer a soft, beautiful accent to dress up your home. Complete application instructions can be obtained from your local paint dealer, or from Rez Wood-Tones, Inc., Boa 142, Springdale, Pa.
