Sfaeinwold ~ On Bridge Reliable Opponents Better Than Partner By ALFRED SfHEIXWOLD « When you say your prayers before going to sleep, don’t ask for a reliable bridge partner; •sk for reliable opponents. If ^you use them wisely you can get more help from two opponents than from one partner. North dealer Both sides vulnerable NORTH

whether you can make an overtrick. Don’t complain that you play rubber bridge and don't worry about overtricks. When both sides are vulnerable and the score is tied, you will get an extra hundred points for making five hearts instead of just four. An extra hundred points is worth playing for. When this hand was played East won the first trick with the ten of spades and fired back the eight of diamonds. Now, it happened that East was a very reliable gent; if he led the eight of a suit, he had nothing at the top of the suit. RELIES OX LEAD South decided to rely on the lead. This would mean nothing if South were an unskillful player; he would still lose a a spade, a trump, and a diamond. But South was Walter Jacobs, for many years presiof the leading automobile renting company and also one of the earliest Life Masters of the American Contract Bridge League. Jacobs took the ace of diamonds, cashed the top clubs and ruffed a club in dummy. Then he took the ace of spades
and the king of diamonds. With the stage thus set, he led a trump and let East take his trick. Poor East was sorry he hadn't taken his ace of trumps at the second trick. Now he had to lead" a spade or a club, and either lead would allow dummy to ruff while South got rid of his losing diamond. It doesn’t pay to be too reliable. Also, it doesn’t pay to leave a singleton ace in your hand. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one spade, and the next player jumps to three diamonds (weak jump overcall.) You hold: S Q J 1083 HA D 8 2 CQJ9 83. What do you say? Answer. Bid four spades. You would have to bid three spades with a much weaker hand; for example with a singleton low heart instead of the ace. The jump shows that you have full values. Copyright 1964. General Features Corp.

You may think casseroles are an American invention, but they’re actually of French origin. In fact, the word “casserole” conies from the French-Provincial word “casola.” meaning "cabin."
This association with rustic life still applies; even today casseroles
are regarded as informal fare.
