The skeleton State Civil Defense staff of eight became the nucleus of an expanded operations center coordinating the efforts of the armed forces, private organizations such as the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the YMCA, and the work of
local governmental units.

“When we were dropped t* our knees by the earthquake and tidal waves in Alaska, the Civil Defense organization was there to pick us up and get us started on the road to recovery. “I can’t give enough praise to the Civil Defense organization. Anyone in Alaska who had reservations about Civil Defense in Alaska, I am sure, has changed his mind now after seeing the great job this agency did and is continuing to do for our people.**

8 squares Baker’s Unsweetened Chocolate 2 tablespoons shortening 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons double-acting baking powder 1 teaspoon salt cup granulated sugar % cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla H cup chopped Califomim dates % cup chopped walnuts 2 cups water 1 !4 cups granulated sugar 1 square Baker’s Unsweetened Chocolate
Melt 3 squares of chocolate and shortening together. Cool. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, and % cup sugar. Add milk, and vanilla. Mix until smooth. Stir in cooled chocolate mixture^ dates and nuts. Pour into greased 8-inch pan. | i Combine water, 1% cups sugar, and 1 square chocolate in a' saucepan. Place over medium heat and stir until sugar U diasolved and chocolate is melted. Bring to a boil. Pour over top of batter. (This makes a chocolate sauce in bottom of pan after pudding is baked.)
