win a trick with dummy’s king. As soon as the opponents take one trick, they will force out your last spade stopper. If you then give them another trick, they will defeat the contract with the rest of the spades. SIMPLE PROBABILITY As Kaplan points out, the odds are against an even break in diamonds, but they are even that West has the ace of heatts. Therefore it is better to lead a heart than to try for a diamond trick. Still, what’s the hurry? Take your four club tricks first. An opponent may run into real or imaginary trouble if forced to discard. In this case West must find three discards on the clubs. If West discards a diamond, the odd change back in favor of setting up a diamond trick. If West discards a couple of
hearts, you can develop a heart trick even though the ace is unfavorably located. And if West discards three spades (an unlikely choice in actual play) you might still make the contract by guessing what he is doing. DAILY QUESTION You have opened with 1 NT and partner had bid two hearts. It is once more up to you, holding: S-A K H-J 9 5 2 D9 8 6 C-A K Q J. What do you say ? '
Answer: Bid three hearts. You would pass with only 16 points or with mediocre support fdr hearts. Partner can go on tr game with about 6 points in high cards or good distribution; and he can pass safely if he has a bad hand with just a long heart suit.

You win the first trick with the king of spades and count eight tricks in top cards. Should you try for the ninth trick in hearts or diamonds? One play is to give up an early diamond trick and then take dummy's top diamonds. Dummy’s last diamond will be good if each opponent started With three diamonds. * The other play is to lead a Jieart from your hand. If West has the ace of hearts you can

By HENRY CATHCART Central Press Washington Writer TY'-ASHINGTON—Lyndon Johnson’s unique press conference, W which was attended by the wives and children of news correspondents, has split the capital press corps as has no other journalistic development in recent years. Those whose families attended staunchly defend the acceptance of the invitation. Those whose families didn’t, and those without families, generally roundly condemn this latest effort to “subvert” the press corps. It is interesting to note that many correspondents who greeted the invitation with something less than enthusiasm had a marked change of mind between the time they got home from work that evening and the time they appeared at their White House post the following morning. Never has the adage “never underestimate the power of a woman”
proved truer.
Even some of the journalists who dutifully appeared on press conference day, with their children holding their hands, rather sheepishly admitted they knew they were being “used.”
Daddy got chance But how many fathers can deny their wives to shine. and offsprings the opportunity to visit the
White House and see the President?
Among the old-timers (whose children are fully-grown and for the most part away from home) there were righteous suggestions that reporters should disregard the invitation and make sure that their families boycotted what they construed was Johnson’s use of the press corps to enhance his political image across the^
nation.
This idea didn’t survive the dinner table conversation. The opportunity for “Daddy” to appear as a hero in the eyes of his young loved ones was too strong a lure to resist. Anyway, the deed was done. To one cynical correspondent who observed that, in any event, "the kids can’t vote,” a subdued and reflective parent-journalist replied, “You’d be surprised.”

• ’EAR, ’EAR!—Republicans and dog-lovers, sometimes indistinguishable, are busily re-writing Shakespeare. Right now they’re working on this slight revision of a famed line in Julius Caesar: “Friends, Romans, Beagles, lend me your ears.” Reaching back into the Franklin D. Roosevelt era, when his Scottie Fala became a political issue, GOPers are hopeful that dogs may still affect votes. But so far at least, Johnson’s widespread popularity seems tc have survived the beagle ear-pulling incidents. It is interesting to note, however, that “Him,” one of the White House beagles responds gladly to the Johnsonian beckoning, but “Her,” th« other beagle, seems to keep at ear’s-length.

• SACRED COWS—There is something in this world called the “Pugwash Conferences.” They are sponsored by that controversial industrialist Cyrus S. Eaton of Cleveland, and are forums where international scientists discuss politics and world affairs. Recently, Eaton sent a news clipping to participants concerning “sacred cows” in India, and wondered whether they should be
a topic of discussion at the next meeting.
One scientist replied in the affirmative, and listed other “sacred cows” as worthy of discus-
sion. They included such topics as:
"All scientists are objective; scientists who are good at science are good at politics; disarma-
ment is an end in itself, and will automatically assure security; disarmament discussions between scientists are scientific.” Which all goes to show that at least one Pugwash participant is making an effort to be objective, although he could have added another topic: that sponsors of Pugwash Conferences suggest
worthy topics for discussion by the scientific community.
