Pope Paul, VI, chose a private audience in the Pope Paul V Room of the Vatican with Jewish War Veterans National Commander Daniel Neal Heller of Miami, Florida, and Past National Commander Abraham Kraditor, of New York City, to speak out for the first time against Soviet Anti-Semitism. The historic 15-minute audience on Tuesday, April 14th, with the two JWV leaders, has been characterized as one of the most significant face-to-face meetings involving the leaders of an American Jewish organization and the highest authority of the Catholic Church. According to Commander Heller, the Pope’s pronouncements on the fate of Soviet Jewry, in effect, have put the Catholic Church on record as expressing its most emphatic disapproval of Anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union and elsewhere. Indeed, the Pope said: “W T e must pray for these poor people.” The audience with the Pope on this subject has been proclaimed as one of the major stepping stones in the relationship between the world Jewish community and the Catholic Church.

Wallace Tells Primary Purpose WASHINGTON UPI — AlaJ bama Gov. George C. Wallace i insisted today that the prime purposes in entering presidential primaries outside the Deep South was to emphasize conservative sentiments. Appearing in a television interview before beginning a new

round of campaigning in Maryland’s presidential primary, Wallace said he wanted to ‘‘impress liberals” and persuade both parties to “conservatize their platforms.” As for his future plans, Wallace said his showing Tuesday in the Maryland voting, in which he opposes Johnson administration stand-in Sen. Daniel Brewster, ‘‘will have something to do with that.” Asked to identify ‘‘the left-

wing minority” he attacks in his speeches. Wallace said he meant active supporters of the civil rights bill. He was reminded that President Johnson and many members of Congress favored the bill and added he did not intend ‘‘to reflect upon the President or any member of Congress.”

Sheinwold Oh Bridge Good Odds Are Fine Sure Thing Is Better By ALFRED SHELNWOLD It’s quite reasonable to bid a slam that depends on a finesse, and better than reasonable if you need only one out of

Declarer won the first trick in dummy with the ace of diamonds and drew two rounds of trumps. > Then he led a low club toward dummy, losing the queen to East’s king. This was a disappointment, since the slam would be home if West held the l ing of clubs. South still had the chance of another club finesse, but his ten lost to West’s jack. Down one. As South played the hand, the odds were 3 to 1 in his favor, but he overlooked a better chance. The correct play is to try to set up one of dummy’s diamonds. If this fails to work. South can fall back on the -dubs and try for his 3 to 1 chance. RUFF IMMEDIATELY After winning the first trick with the ace of diamonds, South | should immediately ruff a dia-1 mond with a high trump. He then leads the seven of spades to dummy’s jack. When tb° ten of spades falls on this trick South is home. He ruffs another diamond with a high trump and leads the three of trumps to dummy’s six. | This permits him to ruff a third low diamond. Declarer leads a heart to dummy’s ace and ruffs a fourth' | low diamond. This clears the last diamond out of West’s hand. South ruffs his queen of hearts with dummy’s last trump, and cashes dummy’s jack of diamonds to discard a club. When the diamonds broke 5-1, South needed a good trump break. If the ten of spades failed to drop, South could abandon the diamonds, draw a second trump and play for the clubs. It cost nothing f o try first for the diamonds. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with on heart, and the next player passes. You hold: S 5 4 H J 9 8732 D 4 CK85 2. What do you say? Answer: Bid four hearts. This shows strong distributional support for hearts, but less than 9 points in high cards.

For taxing purposes I am considered head of the household, but the real Lord of Pennyworth Manor is a pint-sized pup named ‘‘Bambi.” Too delicate to withstand the extremes of either winter or summer Bambi has spent most of his deluxe life span indoors. Early in life he chose his favorite relaxing spots and now he expects us to apologize should he be asked to make way for mere humans. He is much to proud to eat table scraps but must dine royally on prepared and costly mixes. He considers it his prerogative to choose his friends and ours, too, and there is no accounting for the fact that he will wag his tail at a book peddler and try to bite the minister. At his obedient servants, the Pennyworths are expected to

drop whatever they are doing and open and shut the doors when he decides to venture forth. And should he come out second best in a tussle with the cat, he expects ar J receives the heartfelt sympa by due such a privileged character. We’ve noticed, however, that privileged characters are not exclusive to the animal kingdom. The business world of men is full of special people called customers, and every courtesy is extended to them. Down at the Central National Bank the welcome mat and all that goes with it are out to the folks who do business there. We wouldn't exactly say that these people are pampered, but we know from experience that all customers do receive the personal and friendly touch that goes with Full Service Banking.
