Saturday First Day To Qualify INDIANAPOLIS UPI ' Speedway’s daredevils had five more days today to work the bugs out of their intricate machines in preparation for initial 500-mile race time trials. Qualifications to select the fastest 33 starters will get under way Saturday amid predictions that the one and fourlap records held by defending “500” champion Parnelli Jones will be shattered by at least a dozen drivers. Jones holds the unofficial practice record of 156.2 miles per hour in the same fourcylinder roadster which carried him to victory last year. He also has a new rear-engine machine at his disposal but has experienced nothing but mechanical problems with it so far. Sunday, after he was clocked at an average speed of 152.794 mph, more trouble beset him when the new car didn’t handle right but he averted a possible crash by pulling off the course. The day’s fastest clocking was posted by Jim McElreath in one of the powerful Novis at 154.533 mph and two-time winner Roger Ward got his new rear-engine machine up to 153.8.
