Dixie Senators Seeking Voters WASHINGTON UPI —Southern strategists searched for allies today in an attempt to stop a leadership-sponsored compromise on a jury trial amendment to the civil rights bill. There were indications that j the southerners were picking up some Republican votes for a modified version of their own jury trial amendment. They were hoping for still more. Kentucky's two Republican senators, John Sherman Cooper and Thruston B. Morton, each offered a “perfecting” amendment Friday to the southernbacked proposal to guarantee jury trials in criminial contempt

would be wrong. When you play bridge with a confirmed trump-drawer you don’t have enough breath to bother holding it. Just follow your bland diet and keep the ulcers under : control. After drawing trumps South tried the club finesse. East wen j I with the king of clubs and returned a diamond to force out 1 declarer's last trump. BLOCKED CLUBS South could take dummys’ I ace and queen of clubs, but couldn't get back to his hand for the ten of clubs. He got! five spades, two didn't lose any-1 thing except time. Of course you can see the correct line of play. South wins the first diamond and draws two rounds of trumps with the ace and king in that order. When the bad break shows up South wants to be in his own hand to try the club finesse. East takes the king of clubs and returns a diamond to make South ruff. Declarer leads a club to dummy's queen and then draws two more rounds of trumps. On the fourth trump South discards dummy’s ace of j clubs. This unlocks the suit so that South can cash the ten and nine of clubs to score game and rubber. And then if a fire should break out South would be about 900 points better off than if he had drawn trumps to begin

with.

Poverty Measure Face Reshaping WASHINGTON UPI —President Johnson’s S962 million anti-poverty bill apparently will undergo drastic reshaping before it is sent to the House floor sometime this month. Democratic members of the House Education and Labor Committee are at work trying to rewrite sections of the sweeping “war on poverty” legislation sent to Congress six weeks ago. The criginial bill was designed to aid youth through a job corps and work-study and training programs: to finance local anti-poverty projects; to establish a domestic Peace Corps, and to provide new assistance to small businessmen and farmers. The final version is expected to be aimed at the same goals, although there is some question about the farm and small business provisions. The other main differences probably will be tighter rules for administration of anti-poverty aid and some small additions not sought by the President.
