Johnson Pushes Poverty Plans WASHINGTON UPI —President Johnson pushed plans for aid to poverty-stricken Appalachia today, heartened by the enthusiasm of the crowds he met on a whirlwind five-state tour strongly reminiscent of a political campaign. The Chief Executive capped his 17-hour personal look at hard times in northern industrial cities and backwoods hamlets by announcing Friday night that he would send to Congress “in a matter of days” a special message urging measures to relieve economic distress in the 10-state area. Johnson was expected to seek approval of a $250 million program to renew’ the human and physical resources of the area, which stretches from Pennsylvania to Alabama along the Appalachian Mountain range. After meeting with the governors of seven of the states, he told a crow’d of about 2,500 at the Huntington. W. Va., airport Friday night, “This trip has been inspiring . . .everywhere we have gone, the thought has inspired us—what a wonderful spirit there is among the people.”

—MARTHA HARTKE remarks, he said: “I have know’ and respected and liked Vance Hartke and Martha and their seven children ever since I met them. I have known some of them longer than others. They have a rather remarkable family life when you realize that they have one child in college and one in the crib!” Mrs. Hartke will be in Greencastle April 28 and hopes to see as many friends as possible. The Putnam County Democratic Women's Club is giving a tea in her honor between 2 and 4 p.m. in the DePauw Student Union.

Asks UN To Stop Flights UNITED NATIONS UPI — Cuba has asked United Nations Secretary General Thant to intervene personally to stop overflights by U.S. U2 planes, it was announced. U.N. spokesman said there was no reaction by Thant to the request contained in a note sent him by Cuban Foreign Minister Raoul Roa. Thant ordered the 19-page document prepared for circulation to all U.N. members at Roa's request. Roa said U.S. U2 spy planes had flown over Cuba 600 times, including 89 flights this year, and that “hundreds” of U.S. aircraft were concentrated in Florida “apparently only waiting for orders to bomb Cuban targets/*
