Threat Is Hoax INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The ancient Indiana Statehouse at the edge of the city's downtown business district was ordered evacuated yesterday when Police Chief Noel Jones received a bomb threat by telephone. Jones said a man called at 12:30 p.m. EST saying an explosive planted in the Statehouse would go off at 2 p.m.
“It’s undoubtedly a crank call but we can’t take any chancer,” said State Police Supt. George Everett. “It could happen” Everett personally se irched the office of Governor Welsh, who was at his desk when the bomb threat came. Welsh left about 10 minutes late.- for lunch. A state police squad and the bomb squad from nearby Fort
Benjamin Harrison searched the building systematically, from basement to the fourth f'oor. Normally, several hundred persons work in the building but most of them w-ere at lunch at the time. The multi-million dollar State Office Building, built only a few years ago west of the statehouse, was not evacuated.
About 4.600 persons work there. Police theorized that the caller spoke from an outside telephone booth. Street noise could be heard in the background, they said. Rooms and offices open to the public were especially combed by the searchers. In some cases even file cabinets were opened.
