PUNCHY NEW YORK (UPI) — A lot of punch-makers have difficulty chilling their punches without

making them watery. Home economists report the secret is to mix the base well in advance and let it stand at room temperature for an hour or two to ripen and blend. Then, let it chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour before pouring it into the punch bowL When ready to serve, pour the mixture over as large a block of ice as your punch bowl will accommodate. The larger the block, the less dilution of the drink.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food distribution program now affects the diets of one out of every six persons in the United States.

A solid piece of ice is far better for the punch bowl than ice cubes, which melt quickly and dilute the drink too much.

Bedding manufacturers report that the standard double bed is 54 inches wide. The kingsize mattress, meanwhile, is 60 inches wide.

Home economists recommend drying slipcovers in pale spring sunlight. Use liquid chlorine bleach in the washing to make covers sweet smelling.

Last week, I started work- ! ing on my second million, which isn’t bad progress for a fellow i who used to push a wheelbarrow for twenty-five cents an | hour. For those interested, I could list several methods of attaining that fabulous first million. Among those which have been j time-tested are: being the lone j nephew of a childless rich uncle; | marrying the only child of a | man of great means; striking ! oil in the back yard; or finding ! yourself mentioned in* the will of an unknown benefactor. Since I never qualified for : any of the above, I took a ' most cowardly and sneaky ap- ; proach. but one so simple that even a child could work it. Realizing that if I lived long enough

to accumulate my first million, I would be too old to spend it, I abandoned the idea immediately began working on my second million. While there seems to be no harm in setting one’s cap for a million bucks, the goal seems a bit impractical for those who find it difficult to properly manage their tens and twenties. For more than 80 years, the Central National Bank has been serving people who gear their pipe dreams to a point considerably below the million dollar level. These Midwesterners, who include the young, the old, and all those in between, have one thing in common with the money tycoon. They have at their disposal all the faculties of Central’s Full Service Banking.

LAOS “NORMAL”—The situation is back to what passes for normal in Laos, with Premier Souvanna Phouma (upper left) back in his post following a period of house arrest in Vientiane, and an apology from coup leader Gen. Kouprasith Abhay (lower left, front) and his rebel general followers. The rebels set up a ruling junta, but strong protests from the U. S., France and Britain, pointing out that the littl* nation couldn’t make it without aid, chilled them.
