On Bridge Sheinwold Book Opening Lead Gets You To Heaven By Alfred Sheinwold If you make the book opening lead on every hand, you will probably wind up in the bridge player’s heaven (wherever that may be.) You’ll need a few’

thousand years in heaven to make up for all the bad results you bet on earth with those book leads. West opened the queen of hearts and almost got all the way to heaven on this one lead, but East calmed down after a
while.
South won with the king of hearts and returned the king of diamonds. West refused the first diamond trick, but It did him no good. He had to take the next diamond and could cash only tw T o hearts. South was sure to get to dummy with the ace of spades in time to run the diamonds. He was sure of nine tricks: one spade, one heart, six diamonds, and one club. West could do nothing after his opening lead, and you may be sure he pointed out that his lead w r as straight out of the book. All of the books recommended leading the queen from a long suit headed by A-Q-J. EXCEPTIONAL CASE West overlooked the fact that
he had an exceptional case. West had had all of his side’s entries and could therefore afford to lead any card at all. The point of leading the queen from A-Q-J is to force out the king immediately. When your partner gets the lead, later on. he will return your suit and you will be able to run all of your
tricks. But this kind of play is unnecessary when your partner is never going to get the lead. West should open the ace of hearts instead of the queen. At the time, he expects to continue his suit, but he changes his mind when he sees the dummy. And the important thing is that West is in position to change
his mind since he wins the fi._i. trick. West switches to the king of spades, knocking out the entry to the diamonds. (If declarer refuses the first spade, West continues spades.) West refuses the first diamond trick, and South is locked out of the dummy.

Star-spangled way to sweeten up your future
The old American proverb says, ‘‘money isn’t everything, but it sure helpo." And that goes double for the money you put in U.S. Savings Bonds. Because this money helps two ways. First, it helps your future. Putting youngsters through college. Building homes and summer cottages. Buying cruises for you and the spouse. You dream it. Bonds can deliver it. Second, it helps your country now, by making Uncle Sam a stronger influence in an unsettled world. Your fellow Americans have tucked over 47 billion dollars into U.S. Sav-
ings Bonds. Why not join them? There’s no safer investment anywhere in the world.
Quick facts about Series E Savings Bonds • You get 33 1 / a% more money when they mature (7 years, 9 months) • You pay no state or local tax and can defer the federal tax until the Bonds are cashed • You can get your money when you need it • Your Bonds are replaced free if lost, destroyed or stolen
