Jerusalem, Xizan 14, 30—For the second time in a week Jerusalem is a city in turmoil. Jesus of Nazareth has been crucified and Barabbas, the rebel, freed! Last evening, following their Passover Seder, Jesus and his disciples retired to the Garden of Gethsemane for prayer and meditation. Shortly afterwards, a patrol of guards led by Judas Iscariot, one of the disciples, entered the garden to arrest Jesus. Following Judas’ kiss of identification, Jesus was seized and taken before the Sanhedrin for trial on charges of prophesying, blasphemy and treason. Pre-dawn balloting showed 68 for conviction, 2 for acquittal Jesus was then taken before Pontius Pilate for condemnation. After hearing the charges and conferring privately with the prisoner, Pilate remanded Jesus to Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee, on the legal technicality of Jesus’ being a Galilean. Refusing to commit himself, Herod had Jesus draped in royal robes, mocked him drunkenly as the "King of the Jews” and sent him back to Pilate. Despite the priests’ demands for the death sentence, Pilate made a second attempt to have Jesus released. Then, reluctantly, he ordered him scourged and returned to him. A large mob had gathered for Jesus’ third appearance at the Praetorium. In a final effort to release Jesus, Pilate resorted to the custom of freeing one prisoner in honor of the Passover. Offered a choice between Jesus of Nazareth and Barabbas, the mob chose Barabbas and demanded crucifixion for Jesus. So ordered Pontius Pilate. Then, calling for a basin of water, he washed his hands, indicating his innocence of complicity in the death of a man he considered guiltless. Following the sentencing, three huge crosses were brought. Jesus and two thieves, also crucified today, were led from the Antonia Tower. Picking up their crosses, they began the long walk to the place of crucifixion, a gloomy hill outside the city which natives call Golgotha, a name meaning "the skull.” By noon the crucifixion was complete. Three gaunt crosses with their suffering human burdens stood silhouetted against a paling sky. After the custom of the Romans, each cross bore a notice-board declaring the crime for which the victim was condemned. Over the head of Jesus the inscription reads, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” f(Sl
