boy Allowed Back In School NEW IBERIA. La. UPI — A high school boy was cleared to return to classes today, his untamed hair still in wiry wings, but his father faced sentencing for hitting the school principal. George Mouton was found guilty Monday of simple battery for hitting New Iberia High School Principal John McGraw. They quarrelled after Mouton's son, Glen, was sent home from classes because his hair stuck stiffly out at the sides. The school has a regulation requiring students to have “normal” haircuts. The school called the haircut “wings.” They are forbidden. Glen’s father called them “cow licks.” They can’t be helped. “My boy wears a crew cut and his hair was not more than an inch long when he was sent home,” the service station operator said. He said the wings were the fault of nature, not adolescent hair fads.

First Lady In Alabama Talk I HUNTSVILLE, Ala. UPI — Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson said today the space ship has lifted the South from a “40 acres and a mule” economy and given the region a future “as bright as the stars.” In a speech prepared for delivery upon her arrival for a visit at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center at Huntsville, Mrs. Johnson said Alabama and the South are playing a “vital role” in the nation's space program. “. . . This is the birthplace of our flight to the moon,” she said. “The men who ultimately will go to the moon will be there because of you and because of facilities in Mississippi, Louisiana and Cape Kennedy, Fla. “Space research and development already have enriched the economy of the South and the future for the South is as bright as the stars and as vast and boundless in its promise as the far reaches of outer space,” she said.
Civil Rights To Hit Senate Floor WASHINGTON UPI — Sen. ate leaders appeared confident today they could score a “onetwo” victory in their first major civil rights showdowns and bring the racial bill to the floor before Easter. Southern senators were reported ready to wind up the first round of their opposition to the House-passed measure and permit a vote Wednesday on formally calling it up. In that case the Senate could vote Thursday on whether to send the bill to the Judiciary Committee — and then begin its Easter recess. Democratic leaders felt sure they could win on both votes — bring up the measure and keep it from going to committee for a 10-day study. But the outcome on the committee motion of Sen. Wayne Morse, D-Ore., was expected to be close. Now in its third week of talk, the Senate is still discussing Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield’s motion to take the bill from the calendar and bring it up for debate. Southerners, feeling that they were gaining support around the country, stretched their series of long speeches from the originally planned two weeks to three weeks.
