West led the sLx of diamonds, and East did some thinking while declarer took the customary ten-second look at the dummy. East knew that South had at least three diamonds, presumably including considerable strength. West’s opening lead was presumably fourth-best from a long suit. West had three diamonds higher than the six, and might also have the only missing lower diamond—the three.

THE DAILY BANNER

South was bound to have the other three diamonds higher than the six, and surely had diamond strength since he had bid and rebid notrump. Now let s see what would happen if East made the normal play of the ace of diamonds at the first trick. East would return a diamond, and South would set up a spade trick to make sure of his game. Even if South got only one spade trick, he would then have eight other tricks — one heart, two diamonds, and five clubs. CONCEALS ACE Foreseeing some such result. East concealed the ace of diamonds by playing the queen at the first trick. South won with the king of diamonds, led a club to dummy, and returned a low spade. East stepped up with the ace of spades and returned the deuce of diamonds, once more concealing the ace. By this time South was sure that West had the ace of diamonds, so that his only chance was to finesse with the nine of diamonds. West won with the ten of diamonds and returned the three of diamonds, still not knowing what was going on. It was enough that East knew. East won the ace of diamonds, capturing South's jack. Then East led his remaining diamond, and West defeated the contract with the rest of the suit. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one diamond. and the next player passes.
