CONCRETE RESEARCH UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (UPI) — Ever wonder what causes concrete pavements to crack when exposed to freezing and thawing conditions? Researchers at Penn State University are attempting to solve that puzzle. Their findings may have nationwide bearing on the cost and life expectancy of highways. Highway departments and aggregate producers from all parts of the country are providing materials to the civil engineering department here for the study.
TIMBER SAFER CHICAGO UPI —Heavy timber buildings are safer from fire damage than structures built with so-called “noncombustible” materials, reports the National Lumber Manufacturers Association. Temperatures inside a burning building can reach 1,700 degrees, often within 10 minutes. But wood beams char to a depth of only one and a half inches after a full hour of that temperature, the organization says, and charring is usually not sufficient to cause collapse.
SAFE DIVIDERS NEW YORK (UPI) — The New Jersey Turnpike, most heavily traveled toll road in the nation, has not had a head-on collision death since steel median dividers were installed along its entire 118-mile course in 1961, reports Armco Steel Corporation’s Metal Products Division.

NOTHING I GUARANTEED
Your fishing license permits you to fish and limits the number of fish you may keep . . . but it doesn’t guarantee you’ll land a thing. The same is true of Indiana’s Five In-vestor-Owned Electric Companies, "licensed” by the Public Service Commission to provide your electric service. Although there is a limit on the profit they are allowed to earn, there is no guarantee that they will realize any profit at all. The Commission regulates rates, financing and services of all public utilities ... but it does not guarantee them a profit Like other companies operating in America’s free enterprise system, Indiana’s Electric Companies constantly search, for increased operating efficiencies. These result in the best possible service at the lowest possible price to you.
