Hegro Subject Of TV Program

HOLLYWOOD UPI — Negro ' cong:ress!nan Adam Clayton Powell was the subject Thursday night of an NBC-TV study that blazed with the adulation of his f In iters and the opposition of his critics. In its one-hour documentary rO. it the Harlem pastor and politic nl power, by all odds the .st decision NBC made was to let the evaluations of Powell •no front his fellow Negroes. The impact was pronounced, and the judgments left to the viewer thus seemed to deprive ^ from sources, of unusual substance. On the one hand, for instance, there were those who heaped praise on Powell as important to the Negro cause. On the other, there was the young Negro in a di u sion group who scored Powell by arguing that the Negro movement was just another political fight to him.

All I could do was smile wryly because Roland's Ime bid had picked up all the marbles. But for his energetic bidding we could have won the rubber by bidding and malong five diamonds.. Quietly and modestly, Roland had managed to steal the scene. DAILY QUESTION As dealer, you hold: S-K J 7 H-A K 4 D-A 10 9 8 4 C-K 2 What do you say? Answer: Bid one diamond. East South West Double 4 Pass Double All Pass

Opening lead — 0 Q The other day. for example, Roland jumped to four hearts on the South hanc. My double with the East cards was peihaps a trifle emphatic. Roland lias taught me quite a bit about what to look for in a bullfight, and I expected to show him what to look for at the bridge table. West opened the queen of diamonds, and Roland ruffed. I was now willing to call the hand off. I would gladly give up the cheese if I could just get out of the

mousetrap.

Declarer led the queen of hearts to my king, and I happened to make the correct return. (Otherwise, perhaps, this hand would never see the light of day.) As you can see, East can expect to win two hearts and a club. Where is the setting trick? The only chance is to develop a spade trick, so East should return the seven of spades without

delay.

FORCES OCT QUEEN Fortunately, West had the ten of spades and could force out dummy’s queen. Declarer led another trump, and back came the king of spades to knock out dummy’s ace. Roland drew trumps and tried the club finesse, losing to the king. The spade trick then defeated the contract. If we hadn’t been ready to cash a spade at this time Roland would have discarded two spade losers on dummy’s clubs. “A brilliant defense,” Roland remarked warmly. It was very sporting of him to say so; most other declarers would just look glum at being defeated.
