ace. South thought about cashing Th ey n0 w enjoy a fuller, sweeter, the top spades and trying to run better life, the clubs, but decided against it And w hen it comes our time to for some obscure reason. (His de- g 0 beyond this earthly door cision was lucky, since the plan we’ll hope to have them welcome w'ould not have worked.) us U p 0 n that heavenly shore. Instead, South tried to run the Missed so much by the Dorsett clubs immediately after taking f am jiy. the first diamond trick. When
declarer led the third round of clubs from dummy, East firmly inserted the deuce of trumps, burbling “Not through the Iron
Duke.”
You may search through all the histories but you won’t find that the Duke of Wellington ever fired off a popgun when the situation called for a cannon. In this case East’s popgun did him no good at all. DRAWS TRUMPS South over-ruffed with a low trump, drew trumps with the ace and king, and found that he didn't have to lose a trump trick after all. He then led a diamond to dummy's king and ran the rest of the clubs to get rid of two hearts. South thus made eleven
tricks.
It’s easy to see that East could defeat the contract by stepping up with the jack of spades rather than the deuce. That is it’s easy to see this play when you’re looking at all four hands. The correct play is somewhat harder at the table, and nobody would scoff at East for ruffing with a low trump if he just kept quiet about it. Maybe the moral of this little tale is the old warning: If you can’t say something good, don’t say anything at all. Builders Favor Compacts The builder’s favorite electric range is variously called a onepiece built-in, a slip-in or dropin. The reasons this type suits the builder so well are essentially the same ones that make it ideal for family kitchen remodeling. 1. It has the built-in look that is just about mandatory these days. It fits into an up-dated kitchen smoothly, with special trim that integrates it with surrounding cabinets and counters. 2. The one-piece built-in is tailor-made for compact kitchens v/here counter and cabinet space *£ at a premium. A variety of models is available to fit in a space from 24" to 30". 3. The same extra-help features found in the other types of electric ranges are available in the one-piece built-in. Its auto-
