Wilkins, executive secretary of the NAACP, said the addition of more policemen “is a danger for the white people even more than for the Negro people, for they let this happen to us, believe me, it's going to happen to them.” "There's only a certain amount of freedom to be enjoyed when mayors can create an army.” Wilkins told 1,100 delegates to the 12th annual southeast regional convention of the NAACP at Macon, Ga. In Jackson, Mayor Allen Thompson said that the city had decided to add 35 men to its regular police force of 400 "to bring us to full complement. . .to take care of all of the cars.”

Sentences Hinge On Psychiatrists LOS ANGELES UPI — The only hope for reduction in the multiple sentences of life plus 75 years meted out to two 23-year-old convicted kidnappers of Frank Sinatra Jr. hinges on the outcome of psychiatric tests they must undergo. Barry Worthington Keenan and Joseph Amsler were handed the maximum sentences by a federal judge Saturday shortly after a jury found them guilty on six counts in the kidnapping of the young singer. The third defendant, John William Irwin, 42, was convicted on five of the six counts. He was found innocent of the key No. 2 count which dealt with the actual abduction of the 20-year-old Sinatra last Dec. 8. He will be sentenced later, possibly to a 75-year term which, in effect, would be life.

Sheinwold On Bridge Declarers Play Better Then Average Defenders By Alfred Sheinwold Within reasonable limits, bridge is an overbidder's game. The chief reason is that the average declarer plays much better than the average defender, so that many an “impossible” contract is made against a slip in the
defense.
South dealer Both sides vulnerable NORTH 4k A 5 3 V A 8 5 4 0 7 2 4» 7 6 4 2 WEST EAST *KQJ 10 76*9842 <?KJ6 V Q9 1 .0 3 0 6 5 * A I 10 +Q983 SOUTH * None V 10 3 2 oakqjiom/ ♦ K 5 .South West North Kart 10 2 * Paa» Pan j 0 All Pass Opening lead — 4 K West opened the king of spades, and South saw that he could not possibly make the contract if West held the ace of clubs. South could discard one heart on the ace of spades, but he would still have to lose a heart and two clubs. And if South went down, he would hear from North: “How could you jump to five? I gave you two aces, and I had never opened my mouth. Yet you still couldn’t make your contract. If you ran your business the way you bid, we'd be in the poorhouse in no time.” And South, who was partnered by his wife, would simply have to sit still and answer, “Yes, angel.” RAY OF LIGHT Just as South was considering this horrible fate he saw a ray of light. He took the first trick in dummy with the ace of spades, discarding a heart from his hand, and led a low heart from dumt— 1
my to the second trick. East followed with the seven of hearts, and South played the ten. West won with the Jack of hearts and led another spade, forcing South to ruff. Naturally, South ruffed with the eight of dia-
monds.
Declarer led his last heart to dummy, ruffed a heart with the nine of diamonds, cashed the ace of diamonds and led the low diamond to dummy's seven. Now he could cash dummy’s last heart, discarding one of the losing clubs. The sharp-eyed reader has noticed, of course, that East could defeat the contract by stepping up with the queen of hearts at the second trick. East must then lead a club. All very true, but not many defenders would be clever enough to do this at the table. And this is why bridge is an overbidder’s game. DAILY QUESTION Dealer, at your right, bids one diamond You hold: S-K Q J 10 7 6 H-K J 6 D-3 C-A J 10. YY’hat do you say? Answer: Double. No matter what your partner responds, you can bid spades next. This will show a strong spade suit and a strong hand. The immediate junip overcall is now used by most experts to show a strong suit, but a weak hand.
