Sheinwold On Bridge All Finesses Will Work When Millennium Arrives By Alfred Sheinwold A little less than 36 years from now a new millennium will dawn, and all finesses will work. Until that lovely day, however, we

must always consider the possibility that a finesse will go sour. West opened the jack of hearts and South forgot the date. He thought the millennium had already arrived so he confidently played the queen of hearts from dummy. East had looked at his newspaper, so he knew the date. He won the first trick with the king of hearts and returned a heart to to force out dummy's ace.

South led a trump to his hand and tried the diamond finesse. East pounced on this with the king of diamonds, cashed the ace of clubs and led another heart before the mice could get at that trick. The defenders thus took two hearts, one diamond and one club to defeat the contract. PESSIMISM PAYS South should not rely on the two finesses since he can make the contract even if East has both red kings. Declarer should play the ace of hearts from dummy at the first trick instead of t i-ying the finesse. The heart finesse is not essential. South leads a trump to his hand and then tries the diamond finesse since this finesse is essential. There is no harm in allowing East to win a diamond trick, but South must do what he can to stop West from winning a trick. East does win the diamond trick, but he cannot get the lead to West for a heart return. The defenders can get only one heart

trick since South will draw trumps and discard a heart on dummy's last diamond. One heart trick is not enough to defeat the contract. South would go down if West had the ace of clubs since then West would get in with his ace to lead a second heart. In that case however, South would still make the contract if West had cither red king. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with 1 NT (16 to 18 points), and the next player passes. You hold: S-8 6 2 HK 5 2 D-K 4 C-A 9 8 4 3. W r hat do you say? Answer: Bid 3 NT. With your 10 points, the combined count should be 26 to 28 points, enough for a game at notrump but a point or two light for a game at clubs.

LBJ UNWRAPS WORLD'S FASTEST JET FIGHTER This is the mighty A-ll plane which President Johnson verbally unwrapped at his first formal news conference. The super-altitude warplane has been tested in sustained flight at a speed of more than 2,000 miles an hour at altitudes in excess of 70,000 feet. Flying better than three times the speed or sound, the dart-shaped jet could theoretically hurdle the 4.665 air miles from New York to Moscow in about two and a half hours.

PRIMARIES—These are the dates on which primary elections will be held in various states. Local laws vary, such as in Connecticut, where nominations are by party convention, but a primary may be required by a loser who gets 20 per cent of the votes; and Delaware, where nomination is by party convention; and in New York, where 1964 legislature sets the primary date. Further, in some states the convention nominates for the U. S. Senate and primaries nominate for the House of Representatives.
