Demos Counting On GOP Support WASHINGTON UPI — Senate Democratic leaders are ready to give Republicans “full credit” if they furnish needed votes to crack an expected southern filibuster against the civil rights bill. Democratic supporters of civil rights legislation believe the cause may he lost if the GOP does not produce about 25 votes to help an estimated 42 or 43 Democrats shut off a filibuster. They feel the GOP is “on the spot” to aid in getting the twothirds majority needed to gag debate. That was the word today as the senate deferred calling up the House-passed civil rights bill pending consideration of the administration’s compromise tax cut measure. The civil rights
battle is not expected to start until next week. The pressure spotlight fell on Senate GOP Leader, Everett M. Dirksen, 111., whose opposition to the public accomodations section of the House bill has softened. Dirksen said the final House version was “much more acceptable” than an earlier proposal.

Island Rocked By Earth Tremors LAJES AFB, Azores UPI — Strong earth tremors shook these mid-Atlantic islands today, continuing a series of shocks that demolished nearly 2,000 houses and set off an international rescue operation for 15,000 islanders. The tremors were felt shortly after midnight at this huge U.S. Air Force Base, a refueling stop for transatlantic flights about 1,200 miles southeast of Newfoundland and 800 miles west of Portugal, which owms the Azores. No Americans were reported injured or made homeless by the quakes, which began four days ago and concentrated their force on neighboring Sao Jorge Island.
Communications with the pencilshaped volcanic island were cut off, but officials in Lisbon said as many as 15,000 of its 20.000 inhabitants would have to be taken to safety.
