An 80-foot high giant tire, in which people can actually ride, is being constructed by United States Rubber Co. for the New York World’s Fair. Called the U.S. Royal Giant Tire, it will afford a high, clear view of the fair grounds for sightseers and camera enthusiasts. Adjacent to the south side of the Grand Central Parkway, the giant tire will face exhibits, fountains, promenades and the Unisphere, symbol of the Fair. It will have a total capacity of 96 passengers, four in each of the 24 barrel-shaped gondolas. The giant tire, designed by Shreve Lamb & Harmon Associates, is being fabricated of U. S. Rubber’s Vibrin polyester resin reinforced with glass fiber. The plastic laminate will weigh 17,500 pounds. It is being molded in sections which will be built onto a steel f ramew encasing the moving mechanism.

A coating of colored polyester resin will give the appearance of rubber, whitewalls, and the red circle of security, U. S. Rubber’s premium tire designation. The gondolas will move around the circumference of the giant tire in the tread section. The company plans to use many of its products in the giant tire. The gondolas will be made of Expanded Royalite, a molded ABS thermoplastic. Seats will be cushioned with Koylon foam rubber and covered with Naugahyde vinyl upholstery. The floor in each gondola will be covered with Royal vinyl carpeting. The exhibit will be located on a 15,000 sq. ft. tract, landscaped with plants and shrubbery. At the entrance, where passengers will assemble for the ride, a series of display cases will exhibit U. S. Rubber’s diversified tire line.

Insulation Bars Heat, Noise From Theater at World's Fair

AFFAIRS

Conventional, residential-type insulation is being used to help solve two problems in a most unconventional World’s Fair building. The Johnson’s Wax Golden Rondelle, now being built at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, looks like a giant flying saucer suspended from six soaring 90-foot-high petals that arch protectively above it. The disk, reached by elevated walkways, will contain a 500-seat theater in which visitors will see a 12minute film. W r iliiam Eisenberg, architect for Lippincott & Margulies, Inc., of New York, designers of the Golden Rondelle, pointed out that the two major objectives were to give the theater maximum seating capacity and to keep out the sound of airplanes landing and taking off from nearby LaGuardia and Kennedy International Airports. Both pioblems were solved by ttsine mineral wool batts of the kind generally used in home Tleeaiice the insula-
