Random Thoughts OJA Doctor

WITH a deep sigh of nostalgic regret, patients say, “Where is the old-fashioned family doctor?” He hasn’t disappeared. He is right near you. He no longer makes his house calls in a horse and buggy. Perhaps he now drives a shiny convertible. He doesn’t trade his medical services for chicken, eggs and milk. He buys his own. But then today’s family doctor doesn’t Dr. Coleman use spinach packs for pneumonia. Penicillin is a pretty good replacement. Today’s “general practitioner” embodies all the kindness, warmth and understanding of the old-fashioned doctor. Talk to him and find out. You’ll find him willing to help in psychological and social problems in addition to curing your aches and pains. The loyal patient has a newfashioned family doctor. The bond between them is as great as ever. • • • FRIENDLY FEVER Fever is a friend. When you or your child get an infection, fever is an indicator of a healthy response of your body to that infection. It means that your body is calling on its reserves to fight off the invasion of germs. With fever comes an increase In the pulse rate, an increase in the fighting white blood cells and an increase of all of the defense mechanisms of the body. Because fever is, too, a warning signal of infection and illness, it is important to discuss it with your doctor. * * * CHILDREN NEED LIMITS “I'm going to run away from tiome, Mommy. I’m mad with

you!”

Rather strong action for a five-year-old. The mother said, “Wait. I’U go with you.” Oh, no. She would just like Mommy to help pack her suitcase. This the mother did. Half an hour later, a nextdoor neighbor discovered the child sitting on her suitcase, patiently waiting at the corner, “I’m running away!” she exclaimed. “Well, why don’t you cross the street?” the neighbor asked. “I can’t,” the little one answered woefully, “Mommy never lets me cross streets alone.” The limits that you establish for your children not only protect them from hazards, but give them the emotional security so important to their development as happy human beings. • • • ACUTE OR CHRONIC Let’s clarify those terms “acute,” “s u b « a c u t e,” and “chronic.” An “acute” condition describes an illness that suddenly occurs, then is cured after a short period. A “sub-acute” condition Is one that lingers a little longer before it disappears. A “chronic” condition Is one that lasts for long periods of time, may temporarily subside, - and then crop up again. So you see, it’s the time factor, not the severity of the illness, that identifies it as acute or chronic. Consulting with your doctor early can prevent many acute problems from becoming chronic. These columns are designed to relieve your fears about health through a better understanding of your mind and body. All the hopeful new advances in medicine reported here are known to doctors everywhere. Your individual medical problems should be handled by your oxen doctor. He knows you best.

Many families on wind-swept Long Island who are accustomed to battening down the hatches have learned that it pays to batten down the roof, too. Federal Housing Administration committments issued on new home construction during the past two years have required Long Islanders to use wind-re-sistant roofing. During this time, in spite of rough Nor’easters and a hurricane, the local FHA office reports, “There has been no evidence of failure of wind-resist-ant shingles.” By far the most popular windresistant roofing material used on homes in all price categories is UL-approved asphalt shingles ^either self-seai : Q2 or interlock-

ing. To conform to fh« FHA re* quirement, builders who use asphalt shingles must use only those bearing the Underwriters’ Laboratories wind-resistant label. The self-sealing variety, which has become increasingly popular in recent years, has been proved effective in severe wind-tunnel tests as well as in actual use in various parts of the country where hurricanes hit the hardest and most frequently. Self-sealing shingles are similar to ordinary shingles except that a special adhesive is applied to them under strict factory control. Once these shingles are nailed in place, heat from the sun acts on the adhesive, bonding each layer of shingles to the one beneath.
