For more centuries than most people realize, wool has been the “warhorse” fiber, sturdy and dependable. Stone Age man may have worn it 12,000 years ago! Wool’s durability is astounding: a Danish tomb yielded a wool plaid skirt that had survived

the ravages of 1500 years. Ancient man (and woman) must have marveled at wool’s seemingly magical ability to shed wrinkles. Modern scientists know that the secret lies in the unique structure of the wool fiber. Crimped and covered with tiny overlapping scales, it can bounce back like a spring to its original shape even after wrinkling. Sometimes, of course, it bounces back to erase the trouser crease or skirt pleats that the wearer wants to keep. But now science has solved even this problem. New processes give 100% wool fabrics a permanent crease that withstands drycleaning and normal wear, and stays sharp even when exposed to

water or steam.

The first method, developed by the Commonwealth Scientific

and Industrial Research Organization, Australia, involves spraying the garment with a dilute chemical solution, setting the creases with steam in a press, and then drying the garment. It’s most widely used for men’s slacks and suit trousers. A second method, developed by the Wool Bureau, “presensitizes” the fabric: the setting solution is applied at the mill and remains in the fabric till the garment is given its final shaping and pressing. This method is favored for women’s slacks and skirts. These changes give the wool fibers a new “shape memory”, but do not change their other properties. The “hand” of the treated fabrics is as luxurious as ever, and their resistance t« wear and tear is unimpaired.

A chicken dinner on Sunday has been an American tradition for generations. An economical meat, as well as flavorful, chicken comes to the table in many ways. This savory chicken stew is a “snap” to prepare ... cooks right on top of the stove. Canned condensed cream of mushroom soup becomes both the sauce and gravy . . . gives it that old fashioned, home-style flavor. The chicken pieces cook right in the soup along with carrot chunks. For the last half hour, you add a package of frozen green beans for extra color and flavor. A complete meal-in-one the family will rave about, serve with peach halves filled with cranberry sauce and salty bread sticks. Ice cream and cookies are for dessert. Sunday Chicken Stew 2 packages (1 pound each) ^4 teaspoon sweet basil, crushed frozen chicken breasts, drum- l ean (10% ounces) condensed sticks, thighs, or wings cream of mushroom soup (thawed) % soup can water 2 tablespoons flour 2 cups carrots cut into %-inch % teaspoon salt pieces Generous dash pepper 1 package (9 ounces) frozen cut 8 tablespoons shortening green beans */a cup chopped onion Dust chicken with flour seasoned with salt and pepper. In heavy pan, brown chicken in shortening. Remove chicken; pour off excess Orippings. Add onion and basil. Cook over low heat a few minutes, stirring to loosen browned bits. Blend in soup and water. Add chicken and carrots. Cover; cook over low heat 30 minutes; stir now and then. Add beans. Cover; cook 30 minutes longer; stir now and then. Makes 4 to 6 servings.
